Hokkaido Day 2!
For our second day we did the obvious and hit up the famous Snow Festival! There are at least two parts (that we know of). One section of the city is dedicated to the main festival, where giant snow sculptures are set up for blocks and blocks--it takes a long time to walk through it all!
They of course have a lot of food stalls like any typical festival. I had my first ever choco banana (a banana dipped in chocolate and covered in sprinkles), which was very not good (it was basically just a mushy banana and I couldn't even taste the chocolate). Welp, at least now I've experienced that.
The snow sculptures were pretty amazing. A good portion of them are advertisements--sculptures commissioned by companies or TV programs. Some made sense (like a giant Dragon Ball Super snow sculpture advertising Dragon Ball Super). Some didn't make so much sense (like a dragon ice statue advertising a beer company?) But I mean it was a dragon, who's going to complain about that.
There were also sections for snow sculptures submitted for different countries. The winning country's statue was... Unfortunately I forget. But it will be in the video!
A few streets over, there's a road blocked off for the ice sculpture portion of the festival, which understandably had much more impressive submissions since you can get a lot more detailed with ice than you can with snow. Here were the awesome dragon statues!!
Since it was above freezing everything was melting a bit, which made me feel bad for all the artists. At least one humanoid ice sculpture was missing a face and I couldn't tell if it was because it was supposed to be that way or if it had melted off.
The festival also lights up at night, but we didn't have time to stick around for that (although Chris filmed some the day before). We got a lot to do yo, so we hopped on a train up to Otaru.
While on the train I took the moment to fix one of my coat buttons (my coat is a bit old and used and falling apart). In the middle of sewing a super nice Japanese grandma came over and started offering me advice, and then took over and finished it herself! I've sewn plenty of buttons but I was happy to chat with her and I was touched that she went out of her way like that for me! It was a really nice experience.
We ended up in a port city for the evening, taking a boat ride around after sunset and walking through a little candlelight festival! It started snowing pretty heavily and by the end of it we were all very cold and wet and ready to get back to our warm airbnb!
It was a fun, albeit cold, day with a lot of video incoming!! We've been trying to do some video editing at the end of the days here but there's really not much time to do anything other than take a bath and get to sleep. Hopefully though Jun will finish the translations on our next video today or tomorrow! (It's our next Patreon tag/challenge--50 Facts About Us!)
