In true Lindsay style from the DBS mini-series, we have solar panels at home. We put them around the house and in the garden and it lights up with motion sensor or when it's dark.
We've used them for over 2 years. Our water heater is also solar panelled which means when there is no sun = no hot water. Yikes.
他山之石 - 美國 SolarCity 聯合特斯拉與 Nest 等在夏威夷推出電力自給自足系統！（03/07/2016 TechNews科技新報）

夏威夷身為離島，能源依賴進口，也是美國能源價格最高的地區，近年來夏威夷積極發展可再生能源以促進能源自給，而夏威夷的高電價，以及結束家戶太陽能餘電回售政策，也成為能源服務推動自家電力自己用的「自給自足」系統的一大誘因，美國太陽能租賃龍頭 SolarCity，聯合正在力推鋰電池儲能的特斯拉（Tesla）、智慧型自動調溫器領頭羊 Nest 及智慧電熱水器商 Steffes，在夏威夷推出自給自足系統。
2015 年，夏威夷結束家戶太陽能餘電回售的淨用電電費（net energy metering，NEM）政策，所謂淨用電電費也就是過去家戶安裝住宅太陽能，白天超發電力可抵銷夜間使用的用電，電力公司只收取電力收支相抵後的淨用電費用，這樣一來等於超發電力以市價售出，相對於電網本身以批發價購電，對用戶可說補貼太過優惠，於是政策有所調整，改為消費者電網供應（Customer Grid-Supply）價格補貼政策，在未來 2 年內，超發電力售電給電網大約只能得市價的一半，且還有上限，歐胡島上現 25 百萬瓦，茂伊島與大島上限 5 百萬瓦。
另外，屬於消費者自給（Customer Self Supply）的用戶，供電給電網時完全無法得到任何回報，也就是說沒有售電這回事，電網只是接受用戶不小心超發電力時多出的電力。
這樣一來，把電賣給電網不如以前划算了，還不如把電力儲存起來，或是利用智慧型自動調溫器等設施的功能來調控用電需求時間，自給自足達到淨零能源。於是 SolarCity 看見商機，聯合本身的住宅太陽能租賃，加上特斯拉的鋰電池能源儲存，以及 Nest 的智慧型自動調溫器、Steffes 的智慧電熱水器，打造控制以上硬體，最大化太陽能發電供應自家用電需求的系統。
在這個系統中，白天多餘的太陽能發電有多種方式轉移到夜間使用，首先是 Nest 智慧型自動調溫器能在還有太陽時預先過度冷房，以儲冷的方式轉移用電時間，而智慧電熱水器也能在白天發電過剩時熱水，儲存到晚上使用，因而轉移了用電時間，若這樣還有多餘電力，則以電池儲存，供夜間使用。
這個系統不僅能幫安裝住宅太陽能的用戶相當於部分回到淨用電電費時代，因為自己的發電與用電盡可能的抵銷了，另一方面，在電網不穩定，經常跳電的夏威夷大島等地，自給自足的電力系統也提供了電網斷電時的備援使用。
SolarCity 自給自足系統售價是每瓦 4.5 美元，包括特斯拉電池、Nest 智慧型自動調溫器以及Steffes 智慧電熱水器，也提供租賃的商業模式，每度電租金 0.26 美元。SolarCity 認為，這次推出自給自足系統，是參與夏威夷政策並實際執行的墊腳石。
夏威夷改變政策，原本市場認為將會對住宅太陽能發展造成一大打擊，但山不轉路轉，SolarCity 轉往自給自足方向，反而推動了能源儲存以及各智慧裝置，其發展如何，將成為分散式能源發展的重要指標。
