2001年來到台灣在榮民總醫院跟天母消防隊實習，基本上那是場「火熱」的洗禮。我爸爸媽媽阿嬤都跟我們講台語，所以我來的時候只會3句非常非常基本的中文。 我所認知的台灣都是從小聽爸媽講的故事，我自以為對台灣很了解，但一到這裡被文化差異徹底衝擊洗禮之後，才知道完全不是想像中那回事。
2001: When I worked as an EMT at Tianmu Fire Station and intern at Veterans General Hospital in Taipei. It was my baptism by fire (sometimes, literally). I arrived in Taiwan knowing only three basic words in Mandarin, I thought I knew Taiwanese culture based off of the stories my parents would tell me, but I was in for a culture shock.

非常感謝這些超讚的朋友，陪伴我成長、讓我避免菜鳥會犯的低級錯誤、教我髒話，哈哈！ 我很懷念那段台灣初體驗的日子。
Thankfully, I had these wonderful people to show me the ropes (heh heh) and rescue me from making many rookie mistakes. (And also, for teaching me tons of bad words in Taiwanese.) I’ll never forget this experience!

It’s been awhile since I last posted a picture of me. Without Layla, without Deon, not in home clothes, not without makeup. Just me, post motherhood, looking stylish, glamorous and unfriendly. Haha!
 
While I must admit that it is nice to have chio photos to showcase on social media, however as I age, more and more so I relish being in the present. And that means, when I am with my daughter I spend quality time with her instead of trying to capture the perfect moment, and be spending quality time with my phone instead. Likewise, when I’m with my friends, at work, with my family, with Deon, having a nice meal, all dressed up for an event or an editorial shoot, when I’m cooking, reading a book, taking my daughter out to park, cycling, working out, etc. I am in that moment with them and myself. It is such a beautiful feeling to be able to be completely engaged in something I am doing, such a privilege to be spending quality time with myself especially after being a mom.
 
It is unfortunate that in this time and age, people often do things for the sake of presenting it to the rest of the world. There’s this weird mentality of, 'if I don’t show then it doesn’t count because people wouldn’t know that I have done it.'
 
I’m proud to say, those days where I needed external validation is over.
 
When I first started Instagram, it was because I wanted to document my life’s journey. I posted my first picture on 10 June 2011, it’s been a decade (OMG)! It’s been through so many stages of my life with me. The good times and the bad, many relationships, heartbreaks, marriage, vacations, wonderful meals, hairstyles, fashion, deaths, births. I am delighted that 10 years later, ive stayed authentic and shared only things that matters to me at that point in my life. it’s like a little journal that I keep. I may not put in much effort with showing ‘Instagram-worthy’ pictures, but I sure do with writing my thoughts.
 
So thank you guys, for being here with me all these years. For accepting my less than perfect photos, my bad grammar, my infrequent posts, my long-windedness, my non-existent replies and comments.

But here I am, what you see is what you get.

#MuseumProject #FINALE

這個月與Art Fund合作的博物館企劃來到了最後一集，位於倫敦南部的杜爾維治美術館 (Dulwich Picture Gallery)是英格蘭第一間開放給大眾的藝廊，館藏以十八世紀前的歐洲古典繪畫為主，一進入大廳就能感受到以深紅與靛藍色調勾勒出的氣派感，館內不大，但以一間連接一間展廳的形式形塑寬敞感，抬頭也能看見天窗，讓午後自然光溫暖灑進。

這次也參觀正展出的特展，名為Unearthed: Photography's Roots（發掘：攝影的根源），展現不同時代下人們如何用攝影捕捉花朵與大自然。從19世紀上半葉攝影技術出現， 20世紀彩色相片逐漸普及，一路到21世紀科技和網路世代的革新，攝影不斷被重塑與定義，或透過不同媒材表達出全新的創作樣貌。從過去走到現今，和館內一牆之隔的歐洲古典畫廊有著很有趣的對照。

光是倫敦就有許多有趣的博物館和美術館值得探索，從月初的#巴比肯藝術中心，月中的#花園博物館，和這次#杜爾維治美術館，都可以看見倫敦的不同姿色。我每去一個新的地方，都喜歡去逛當地博物館或藝廊，因為那是最能理解他們故事的場景，以及發現他們在乎什麼、對什麼感興趣的方式。我也特別喜歡英國人看待博物館的態度，已經是生活的一部份，很多都是可愛的爺爺奶奶，透過加入會員、博物館之友或時時關心何時有新展開幕，作為對藝術，對文化產業的支持。

As the first public art gallery in England, Dulwich Picture Gallery has presented its collections of art for more than 200 years. It’s a beautiful place where you can walk into the stunning history of European paintings by masters like Rembrandt, Gainsborough and Canaletto. From the portraits in paintings, we imagine the emotions the painter wanted to show us and the stories behind those faces.

Not only European art here but there are also opportunities to discover the beauty reflected through the progress of photography. The exhibition Unearthed: Photography's Roots shows us how plants and botany can be reimagined through photography from the 1840s to nowadays. It’s also inspiring to see the desire to capture the wonders of nature for many years still influences us from generation to generation.

When arriving in a new place, what I do first is visit the local museums. It’s a place where you can understand their stories and what they care for. Throughout this month, it’s a great time visiting #BarbicanCentre, #GardenMuseum, and #DulwichPictureGallery with #StudentArtPass , and there’re still more worth-visiting museums in London waiting for you to discover.
