The Straits Times today republished a thoughtful memo that Lim Boon Heng wrote to NTUC staff. He described real-life examples of organisations and individuals who stepped forward to help the less fortunate, and he lauded the personalised, creative efforts of these unsung heroes.
We are fortunate there are many Singaporeans like those mentioned by Boon Heng, who have the heart, imagination, and determination to go beyond saying that something needs to be done, to actually doing something themselves, to change the lives of those around them for the better.
This week ST has been running inspiring stories of such initiatives under their ‘Causes Week 2018’ platform. I hope you’ve had a chance to read some of these stories – a photographer and her friends befriending children staying in Yishun’s rental flats, youths volunteering to help people struggling with mental health issues, a professional boxer starting a sports programme for at-risk kids, a charity that distributes food and groceries to the needy, and many more.
