ground 本身就是一個很多解釋的字，它可以用在許多方面如：
地，地面，士地，地產，田產，場所，庭園，範圍，領域，
繪畫等的底色，等等。
所以on the ground 的解釋也是一拖拉庫，如你所說的：
1)基於這個理由---on the ground(這個ground當foundation用)
2)躺在地上----lying on the ground.
3)腳踏實地----have/keep one's feet on the ground .
4)底色的----golden characters on a red ground.
5)在地上，當場，在手邊，在決鬥----視前文而定。
6)遍地皆是，多得很---thick on the ground.
7)微不足道，寥寥無幾，質量很差的----thin on the ground.
8)在自己熟悉的領域裡，在行----on one's own ground.
單單這個phrase就有這麼多，更別提變化一個字會有多少意思在，所以我
認為你可能要去買個電子辭典，那裡頭的介系詞片語才會夠用。
而且要愛國，買無敵的，別買老共出產的金字典。
