The United States and Taiwan have a long history of STEM cooperation and academic exchange, including through the “GLOBE” program (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment). From summer 2020 to spring 2021, AIT worked with Hsin Tien Senior High School and Xin Wu Senior High School to collect data on mosquitos and help combat mosquito-borne diseases. I got on a plane at the drop of a hat on a risky overdue whim, with obvious excitement at my first adventure here, but minimal expectations 🤷🏻♂️ I’m glad I didn’t have time to create any because whatever I could have dreamt up would have been blown out of the water 💦

There are plenty of things about this place I’m yet to get my head around (the whole gun thing is a bit odd, the mosquitos are the size of birds and like to bite me on the head, the fact that someone can ask me if a place called “Malaysia” is in Europe is gobsmacking and some of the alternative vocabulary is questionable) but for the other 996 reasons it’s a truly wonderful place 🏞 Consider me smitten and very grateful to be here - I only wish it wasn’t in such contrast to the current situation back home 😔

1. 衣類の防虫
【必要な物:】
- レモングラス
- 不織布袋
- ラベンダー
【作り方】
レモングラスを刻み、ラベンダーと共にお茶パックなどの不織布袋に入れます。ハンガーにかけたりしておけば衣服が虫に食われにくくなります。
2. 蟻よけスプレー
【必要な物】
- スプレー容器
- 水
- ペパーミントオイル
【作り方】
スプレー容器に水とペパーミントオイルを入れてます。良く振ってから蟻が来そうな場所に吹きかけておきましょう。蟻はミントの香りが苦手なので避けるようになります。
3. 小バエキャッチャー
【必要な物】
- りんご酢
- ボウル 小
- ラップ
- 爪楊枝
【作り方】
ボウルにりんご酢を入れてラップを張り、爪楊枝で穴を沢山あけます。フルーツなど小バエの寄りそうなものの横においておけば、沢山取れるはずです。
4. 蜂よけスプレー
【必要な物】
- スプレー容器
- 水
- 食器用洗剤
【作り方】
スプレー容器に水と食器用洗剤を入れて混ぜます。蜂が来そうな場所に吹きかけておけば、夏場の屋外などでも蜂が寄りにくくなります。
5. ハダニよけ
【必要な物】
- にんにく
- 水
- スプレー容器
- 食器用洗剤
【作り方】
ニンニクをスライスして鍋で少量の水で煮ます。煮汁をスプレー容器に移し、水で量を調整して、食器用洗剤を加えます。ハダニが付きそうな葉っぱに吹き付けておけばハダニが寄り付きにくくなります。
6. ゴキブリ退治
【必要な物】
- 粉砂糖
- 重曹
- 容器 蓋つきの小さなもの
【作り方】
粉砂糖と重曹を容器に入れて混ぜます。ゴキブリの来そうなところに振り掛けておきましょう。効果的に退治できます。
7. 蜘蛛よけ
【必要な物】
- 水
- レモンオイル
- スプレー容器
【作り方】
スプレー容器に水とレモンオイルを入れてよく振り、蜘蛛が巣を張りそうなところに吹きかけておけば、レモンの効果で蜘蛛を寄せ付けないようになります。
自然派の材料で作る虫よけなら安心ですね。これで植物、衣類、食べ物などを簡単にケア。快適な生活を送りましょう。

Pictures of Bukit Besi in fall colours popped out frequently on social media, I decided the check it out. The hill had a fire during the dry season, which left a small part of the hill burnt and the leaves were turning brown.
The hill was located at Alam Damai, which isn't too far away. I went on a weekday to avoid the crowd, I probably had less than 10 human contacts.
The hike was a short 4km with about 300m elevation gain. I did try to get to the waterfall but the trail was barricaded with barbed wire and a warning sign post. There goes my plan to try out the stove. There were a lot of mosquitos which made the shoot pretty unpleasant.

Clearing out all the trees and bushes which is basically an invitation for bugs and insects to come and invade my territory. Been getting so many bites by mosquitos so it's it's super frustrating! I can't keep from scratching! Feels so good when I do even though I know it's so bad! So I've been demolishing everything to clear the air! Make my space clean, clear and free of unwanted guests! Let's hope this project is not taking up too much of our time!
