這次除了手帳，我們還會上架好久不見的複合材質貼紙包！這款用炭精筆繪製的 Urban boy 貼紙是用一種調皮、叛逆又隨性的感覺繪製，算是我個人任性的成果。

I may be jumping the gun but the next 4 days might be a very poignant moment for the Malaysian comedy scene. Over 30 home-grown comedians are going to film 5 minute sets on a show called ‘Sedapnya Mulut’ on Astro Warna.

Why is this important? First of all, we are getting an English + Malay stand up comedy show on air. Like EVERY network/organiser, they always say that they want comedians to be ‘edgy’. But in my experience when the day comes, it is red-tape galore. “Oh you cannot say that, you need to change that joke, don’t talk about that…etc.” It is always a blanket-no. “Don’t even go there.”

Astro Warna was no different. They said, they wanted an edgy show. EDGY EDGY EDGY! ACTUALLY WHAT IS EDGY?!

Shamaine Othman who is producing the show, got me to run workshops with the comedians to prepare them for the taping. I spent 2 weekends listening to over 30 comedians. After the first weekend, I saw how most of the comedians came with prepared material but was often halted by doubt. They’d be mid performance then stop to ask, “can I say this on TV? Is this word allowed?” It was heartbreaking.

Shamaine went back to Astro, met the regulatory department and fought our case. For the first time, instead of the usual wet blanket of No, they said… “Okay, tell your comedians to say whatever they want. Don’t hold back. If it is too bad we will bleep it.”

This doesn’t sound like a big step forward but it totally is because we used to be censored so badly. For the first time, a major network is allowing comedians a chance to have ownership and exercise responsibility over their own material. That is one beautiful step forward if you ask me! Astro Warna has said that the comedians should say anything as long as it is tastefully done.

I honestly don’t know what the show will end up looking like. It could be 15 minutes of constant bleeps but I’d take that over don’t-go-there-compromises like stupid prank shows and wet-noodle sketch shows with faux moral lessons.

I really feel like, within me, from the ashy soils of disappointment, a sudden feeling of hope has blossomed. (drama.) The way I see it, if they're opening the door, I am going to walk in, hang my coat and hat, drink their tea, and with luck, have a wonderful conversation.

So, after having gone through the workshop with the comedians, I can confidently say we are going to bring the funnies and we are ‘going there’. I am going to say the word ‘babi’ at least 20 times (tastefully).

7 Tips to make Kyaraben (character Bento lunch box)

#1 Find the image easy to work with: Opened eyes are sometimes difficult to make, so choosing the character with smiling eyes or winked eyes saves time.
#2 Make rough sketch of Bento: detailed ideas are better because you may run out of energy to go easy.
#3 Shop ingredients based on your sketch: if you have detailed ideas with you, you may luckily find better ingredients.
#4 Use vivid colors for the egg crepes. Egg white is easy to break, so you can mix starch and water to prevent it from breaking（1 tsp. starch & 1 tsp. water for 1 egg white).
#5 Start from larger parts, trace them on a parchment paper, and cut out the ingredient with a design knife.
#6 Make sure you don't put eyes on top of ham (face). Face parts must be at the same level or eyes will look like popping out and scary...
#7 Cut Nori seaweed lines as thin as possible. Thick lines look sloppy...

Basic ingredients you need to make Kyaraben:
egg
food coloring
cheese slices
ham slices
Kanikama (fish cake)
Kamaboko (fish cake)

Time you need may depend on the character and your concentration. Please take time to make it. You can make the character a day before and keep it in the fridge.

*You can make rice or noodle dish with a lot of vegetables to save time making side dishes.
