How Big Is Amazon, Really?

I’m fond of ( ) repeating a shopping statistic ( ) that often surprises people. In the United States — even during the pandemic — only about $14 out of each $100 worth of stuff we buy is spent online. Amazon is responsible for roughly $5 of that.

So is Amazon a giant that dominates ( ) our internet spending or a blip ( ) in America’s shopping universe? It depends on how you look at the numbers. Amazon is huge in internet sales, but puny ( ) relative to all the goods Americans buy.

Our perception ( ) of Amazon’s size influences how the public and policymakers think about the company. And yet while the company’s share of spending matters, it also doesn’t tell us everything.

Permit me to get a little nerdy ( ) about numbers. Without a doubt, Amazon is the king of online shopping in the United States. Research firm eMarketer estimated that Amazon will be responsible for more than 40% of Americans’ e-commerce spending this year. The second-largest internet store, Walmart, is far behind at about 7%.

Back to my point, though, that internet shopping remains relatively ( ) small. The picture is a little different depending on how you count.

U.S. government data on online shopping plus those eMarketer estimates ( ) put Amazon at about 5% of all U.S. retail sales.

(And there’s a wrinkle ( ): A trade group for retailers recently told me that there could be inaccuracies in the government counting of shopping that blurs ( ) the line between stores and online, such as picking up online orders in person.)

Data can be a weapon. Amazon often uses a version of the 5% sales figure to counter ( ) critics who say the company is too big and powerful. But government investigations into big technology companies are looking at the behavior of Big Tech, not just their size. They’re trying to answer whether companies abuse their power to get advantages over competitors and hurt us.

Amazon has had a profound ( ) influence on people’s behavior, the strategies of entire industries and our communities no matter what the numbers say.

What we’re seeing in real life from Amazon and beyond are big ripple effects ( ) from a small market share.

So, is Amazon big? Yes and also no. And the reality is that no matter what the numbers say, Amazon commands ( ) the attention of people, other companies and governments because it’s influential in reshaping the world.

亞馬遜到底算不算大？

我喜歡重述一個常讓人吃驚的購物統計數字。在美國，即便是疫情期間，我們每購買100美元商品，僅14美元是在網上消費，其中亞馬遜約占了5美元。

所以，亞馬遜究竟是主宰我們網路消費的巨人，還是美國購物世界乍現的一個小光點呢？端視你如何看待這些數字。亞馬遜網路銷售金額龐大，但跟美國人總體商品購買額相比卻微不足道。

我們對亞馬遜規模的感受，影響著民眾和決策者對該公司的看法。然而，該公司在消費者支出中所占比率固然重要，卻並不代表一切。

且容我在數字上再多著墨些。無疑地，亞馬遜是美國網路購物之王。研究公司eMarketer估計，亞馬遜將占今年美國民眾電子商務支出的40％以上。第二大網路商店沃爾瑪則以7%左右遠遠落後。

不過，回到我原先談到的重點，網路購物規模仍相對較小。隨著計算方式的不同，情況也會有些差異。

（還有一個小問題是，一個零售業的同業組織日前告訴我，政府對購物數字的統計可能不準確，因為模糊了實體商店和網路商店的界限，例如在網路下單卻親赴實體商店取貨。）

I want to share a testimony today to encourage you.

A few days ago, a toy company, Hasbro, contacted us saying they wanted to send some of their toys over for Mae as a sponsorship.

We were excited for Mae and said yes!

When the toys came, they turned out to be a FurReal toy cat, BabyAlive baby girl Doll, and a PlayDoh Drizzy Ice Cream PlaySet!

The amazing thing is that Mae has always expressed her love for kittens, and that she wants a sibling—specifically a little sister, and she also said she wanted an ice cream making toy set!

We didn’t tell Hasbro any of this, so how could they have known? It is because our Lord Jesus knows.

He knows what Mae likes and He cares for her so much that He would even give her the exact toys that she asks for and loves the most.

There was a time last year whereby one of our backpacks was broken. Amilee and I were discussing whether we should get a new bag or use one of the ones we have at home.

Shortly after that discussion, a Swedish company, Gaston Luga, contacted me and said they wanted to send two of their backpacks to us. The timing was so perfect, it could only be God.

Another time last year, Amilee and I were just casually complaining about how our wired earphones were always entangled and how nice it would be to have wireless earphones.

Soon after, a Swedish company, Sudio, sent us a pair of their premium wireless earphones to review. And they sent us two more sets this year!

Time and time again, we’ve seen our good God lavish His love upon us like this.

We’re not showing off that we get lots of sponsored stuff—we know it’s by God’s grace.
In fact we’re so humbled and thankful to receive these because we really NEED them and can’t afford these luxuries ourselves.
We are literally depending on God for our survival—we are ultimately sponsored by God.
Without Him, we don’t know where we would be.

The point of sharing this is to testify how amazing and generous our God is, that He is so caring, even personally taking notice of these little things in our lives.

We have the same God. If He cares for us this way, He will do the same for you and give you many pleasant surprises, and provide the things that you need.

Remember that your God is a living God. Christianity is a real, organic relationship with Him, not a dead religion.

Talk to Him, and freely ask for what you need. Be really open with Abba God, for He already knows what you need before the words are even formed on your tongue.

He says this to you: “You are always with Me, and all that I have is yours.”

我熱愛旅行，也喜歡在台灣趴趴走~台灣有一個非常特別的植物園。
那就是~「福山植物園」。
Welcome to Taiwan . I am Poyu Lin. I am in Fushan.
I love to travel. love wandering around Taiwan.Taiwan is home to a really special botanical garden. It’s Fushan Botanical Garden!
野生動物，牠會從四面八方跑進來，你不要餵食，也不要逗牠，我們要尊重牠們是主人。
有別於一般植物園或是森林遊樂區的觀光導向，福山是一處國際長期生態研究的試驗地。因此雖然開放民眾參觀，為了避免人為因素破壞環境，除了有入園人數限制，且每年都會閉園一個月維護。
我在福山已經快30年了，這裡的一草一木，這裡的動植物，都像我的兄弟姐妹一樣，當我來到福山的時候，很難想像到，台灣還有這一片，非常原始的地方。
Wild Animals,They come here from all around,Don’t feed them,Or play with them,We need to respect that they live here.
Unlike other botanical gardens and forest recreation areas that are geared towards tourism, Fushan is an international experimental site for long-term ecological research. Though it is open to the public, to minimize human disturbance to the environment, the garden puts a limit on the number of visitors allowed in, and closes for a month every year.
I’ve been at Fushan for almost 30 years now,Every tree and blade of grass here,Every plant and animal here,Is like a brother or sister of mine, When I came here to Fushan,It was difficult to imagine,That Taiwan had a place like this,So pristine and untouched.
福山植物園內栽種了多達700多種台灣原生植物，之中許多台灣稀有植物品種，也在這裡成功被復育。沒想到蕨類植物有這麼多的顏色及葉形。
漫步福山，宛如置身秘境，這裡沒有喧囂的人聲，入耳盡是大自然的樂章！
這個植物園，裡面的樹木都不孤單，因為很多植物跟它們作伴~
對，你看這些高大的喬木，上面有很多附生的植物，這算是樹木公寓
Fushan Botanical Garden boasts more than 700 different species of plants indigenous to Taiwan, including many rare and precious species that have been successfully conserved here.
I didn’t think that ferns could come in so many different colors and shapes!
Walking in Fushan, it’s like you’re in your own little world, away from the noise of human voices. The sounds of nature are all you can hear!
In this Botanical Garden,None of the trees Are lonely,Because there are so many other plants to keep them company.

來到福山，放慢腳步是必須的，不然會錯過，園區裡一個又一個的驚喜
左邊這個是? 這是山棕，它這個葉片，可以當大型花材的裝飾。
裝飾用的~然後它葉鞘的纖維，可以當蓑衣
在這裡每種植物，都有自己特有的故事，而我也才發覺，植物跟我們的生活如此緊密。走在植物園裡真的令人很放鬆，臺灣葉鼻蝠，走去看看，你看在那裡
在這座友善的森林裡，人與動物之間的距離也縮短了!!
動植物們能在這是一種幸福！能夠來這裡進行一趟森林生態之旅真好！我　　是林柏妤，享受在台灣的時光，我們下次見！

In Fushan, you need to slow down so you don’t miss out on the many surprises 　
found throughout the garden.

This is a Formosa palm,Because of its leaves,It can be used as a large landscape plant
For decoration.
And the fibers in its leaf sheaths,Can be used to make a type of raincoat like a cape
Here, every species of plant has its own unique story. I never realized how closely related these plants are to our own lives.
So relax walking around this botanical garden, Taiwan leaf-nosed bat,let’s take look,Over there.
This friendly forest also brings visitors closer to the animal world.
The plants and animals that live here are really lucky, and so are those who are able to come here to take a trip through the forest! I am Poyu Lin, enjoy your time in Taiwan! Ciao～
