Three works from Taiwanese photographer Juan Sea’s “麗是水 who are you” series, shown at the 2019 LiShui Photo Festival in LiShui China. This body of work emerged from the artist’s residency in the city of LiShui as part of the photography festival. Like many other works by Juan, this series sifts out the abstract from his day to day moments, and like many of his titles, it employs a malapropism found in the Chinese language between LiShui. This playful approach to language appropriately reflects the artist’s photography practice. Scenes of street-life, and workaday moments are inverted, made more opaque, and lend themselves to a more poetic reading. The series features negative color prints which can be “activated” through changing the setting on a cell phone camera to negative mode. When seen through the screen with this setting, the image is reverted back to a normal positive image. “麗是水 who are you” is an approach to seeing how the views of the everyday are now mitigated through the proliferation of cellphone cameras. More works by Juan Sea to be exhibited later this year.
