//Hong Kong locals Prune Deer open their almost-six tracker Solid Transparency with 29 seconds of white noise, which is either clever and postmodern or a bit pointless and annoying. But although the hiss carries through to track two, it quickly fades into the shimmering, largo soundscape of “Sunlight”.
The sun seems to be rising as the first cymbal crash heralds daybreak (exactly how I like start my day) before gearing up into a fairly rocking instrumental. A caffeinated charge gives way to the aural equivalent of a drive in the countryside, via a couple of time changes, before ending in something like a three-car pile up. A strong start.
“2 Days to Escape” introduces some funky drummer amid twinkling guitar interplay, bouncing between duple and pentuple time as the “math rock” label demands. The bass drive is a bit 1980s Herbie Hancock – which is perhaps a matter of taste – and there are dashes of theatre that would be uplifting live while sounding a wee bit Joe Satriani – remember Surfing With the Alien? – on record.
That’s followed by the energetic disco funk of “Tango Night”, which has a Miami soundtrack vibe, and the package concludes with “Shining” and “HeatDeath”, offering more of what we’ve already heard.
I love me a good instrumental outfit these days, and a bit of math adds welcome spice. But I’m not sure what we’re supposed to be “post” nowadays, and I question whether an act that doesn’t buy into dissonance – which Prune Deer doesn’t, and fair enough too – should claim “noise”.
But those are semantics. Essentially, Solid Transparency is just what it tells us it is. A sincere offering from a serious band with plenty of skill, but one that’s perhaps over-trying to be an exemplar of the chosen genre, and could benefit from seeking wider and deeper inspiration.

Manipulating vital signs in septic shock: which one(s) and how?
The interplay between elevated body temperature and the outcome of critically ill patients is complex. While it is widely accepted—albeit with variable strength of the evidence—that control of fever in patients with neurological compromise is advantageous, in most other cohorts it is not clear. On one hand, control of fever reduces metabolic demand and its treatment may be beneficial. On the other hand, fever is an adaptive response to infection and its treatment may be deleterious.
In their previous study, Schortgen and colleagues randomized patients with septic shock to a regimen of either permissive fever or external cooling to a normothermia goal. They observed a significant positive effect not only on their primary outcome of reduced vasopressor use but also on overall mortality associated with temperature control (14-day mortality 19 % with cooling vs. 34 % in controls, p = 0.013). In the present study, they conducted a further secondary analysis in order to investigate the confounding effects of heart rate on mortality. This question was raised in part related to an open label clinical trial that showed a significant reduction in mortality among septic shock patients randomized to heart rate control (<95/min) by means of an esmolol infusion as compared to controls. In their present analysis, they observed that the effect of temperature control on mortality was not mediated by control of heart rate.
Based on these data, one may come to the conclusion that fever should be controlled in patients with septic shock. However, there are some key issues which must be taken into consideration.
While the results of the original study by Schortgen are compelling, treatment of fever in septic patients has been by no means conclusively demonstrated to be beneficial. Observational studies including hundreds of thousands of patients have documented highly variable results [5, 6]. In addition, the overall body of clinical trials to date investigating anti-pyretic therapy in critically ill neurologically intact patients has not shown any overall benefit. Finally, we have observed numerous examples of small studies demonstrating dramatic mortality reductions associated with a number of different interventions in septic shock that could not be replicated in subsequent larger definitive studies.
Another important consideration in evaluating the studies reported by Schortgen et al. is that the confounding effects of beta-blocker use on outcome, whether successful or not in heart rate control, is not clear. Similarly, the study by Morelli et al. did not report on specifics regarding temperature control. While the current study by Schortgen et al. supports that the effect of temperature control on outcome is independent of heart rate, we are left wondering what would have been the effect of temperature had beta-blockade been applied systematically? To adequately address this question, the development of a factorial randomized control trial is required.
Further, in a more general sense, it is key to distinguish whether vital signs such as temperature and heart rates are elevated or decreased as a beneficial compensatory mechanism, implying that they should be left alone, or that vitals represent exhausted or counterproductive values which require manipulation by critical care specialists (Fig. 1). This is highly complex given that the transition of a vital sign from compensating (physiological) to decompensating (or pathological) may depend on many simultaneously acting circumstances, such as the underlying disease, the cross-talk with other affected organs, and physiological reserve of the patient. Furthermore, these may vary both inter- and intra-individually over time. Examples of such transitions into decompensated vitals on which more consensus exists include malignant hyperthermia (i.e., cool the patient), stress cardiomyopathy (i.e., start inotropic drugs) but also hypotension in compensated heart failure in an outpatient situation versus hypotension in cardiac shock. With regard to the example of heart failure, it is obvious that the patient with a blood pressure of 80/50 mmHg with compensated heart failure requires no intervention, whereas progression to decompensated heart failure and subsequent shock in another patient with the same blood pressure requires immediate treatment. So, theoretically, trials that include both the physiologically compensated and decompensated subjects for interventions that modify specific vital signs (e.g., blood pressure) may wrongfully practise “one size fits all”, when in fact selection for such interventions based on specific patient characteristics—even with a remarkably similar underlying condition—is essential.

The 2018 Toyota C-HR is designed around the theme of “distinctive diamond”, combining style and strength. The CHR ’s exterior is unique in the compact crossover market – combining a coupe-like sporty upper body with a dynamic lower body and powerful stance. The interplay between the main body and prominent wheel flares presents an iconic diamond profile that stands out from the crowd. The face is sharp and powerful, designed to look wider than it is and express the C-HR’s dynamic, urban-friendly performance. The profile emphasizes the C-HR’s agile proportions, with powerful wheel arches housing large 17” alloy wheels – accentuating the vehicle’s sturdy posture and compact cabin. And the rear design, complete with hatch fitted with a lip spoiler and functional top wing, enhances the C-HR’s futuristic look and surprising girth.
Open the door, and the C-HR invites drivers into a modern cabin that may appear compact from the outside, but is surprisingly spacious. The interior is a study in contrasts – combining a seamless, expansive space for five adults with a driver’s zone that places the focus on performance. The exterior’s distinctive diamond motif is reinforced inside, through diamond-patterned textures and fittings – from the dual-zone automatic climate controls, to the speaker surrounds and door pulls, to the black headliner above the front row seats.
The C-HR’s sports car-inspired dash is angled to provide the driver with a clear view of the road ahead and intuitive access to instrumentation. Bolstered bucket seats keep driver and passengers snug and comfortable during spirited driving. There’s generous headroom and legroom in the rear seats, which are split 60/40 and fold flat for extra cargo-carrying versatility.
The C-HR benefits from the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) – Toyota’s state of the art approach to platform and powertrain design. The vehicle takes full advantage of TNGA to deliver sports car-style responsiveness, linearity, and consistency of performance. TNGA confers an inherent low centre of gravity, high strength and body rigidity, and low weight to give the C-HR superior handling, whether one is steering, accelerating or braking.
This is further enhanced with a newly-developed MacPherson strut front suspension to help the C-HR’s front end respond quickly and precisely at initial corner turn-in. At the rear, an all-new double-wishbone suspension includes Toyota’s first use of shock absorbers with urethane upper supports to improve passenger comfort, cabin quietness and vehicle agility.

Munich. With the unveiling of the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance at the IAA Cars 2017 show in Frankfurt, the BMW Group is not only pulling back the covers on a new model concept for the luxury segment, it is also introducing a whole new take on luxury for the BMW brand. The Concept X7 iPerformance embodies this understanding of luxury in the form of a striking exterior composed of intently focused lines, and combines it with a generously-sized, six-person interior pared down to the essentials: elementary forms, high-class materials and a state-of-the-art infotainment system brimming with connectivity. The Concept’s iPerformance badge denotes the presence of groundbreaking BMW eDrive technology allied with a BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine to create an exceptionally efficient and dynamic plug-in hybrid powertrain that excels in all driving situations – including running with zero local emissions.
A taster of the production version.
This study car offers a look ahead to the future production model set to make its debut in 2018. The forthcoming BMW X7 forms part of the largest model offensive in the company’s history. As part of its NUMBER ONE - NEXT strategy, the BMW Group is seeking to substantially increase its sales and revenues in the luxury class. The BMW X7 has a key role to play here, as Ian Robertson, Member of the BMW AG Management Board responsible for Sales and Brand BMW explains: “Since BMW founded the Sports Activity Vehicle segment with the first X5 back in 1999, every subsequent X vehicle has broken new ground. The BMW X7 continues this tradition: the X family’s new top model extends BMW’s offering in the luxury class and redefines the concept of luxury for the BMW brand and beyond. It also embodies one of the most important elements of our corporate strategy NUMBER ONE - NEXT, to grow our presence in the luxury class. Furthermore, the BMW Concept X7 demonstrates it’s perfectly possible to combine a large sports activity vehicle with an electrified drivetrain.”
A case study in modernity, luxury and presence.
The status of the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance as a luxury-class BMW SAV is instantly apparent. The spectacular exterior, imposing dimensions and skilfully judged proportions endow it with an extraordinary sense of presence and an ultra-modern aesthetic fused with innate dynamism. “The Concept introduces the BMW Sports Activity Vehicle DNA into the luxury segment. The new BMW design language employs just a few, extremely precise lines and subtle surface-work to raise the bar in terms of presence and prestige,” explains Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The BMW Concept X7 iPerformance has a luxurious and sophisticated feel to it, thanks to its understated use of forms and incredibly precise details.”
The luxurious character of the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance is brought alive by its cabin, in particular. The vehicle’s sheer size forms the basis for an interior experience unmatched by any BMW past or present. As a result of the interplay between precise, pared-down forms and an open sense of space, the driver and passengers find themselves immersed in a very modern setting with an equally exclusive feel. The wealth of possibilities offered by personalised, digital connectivity allows the vehicle’s interior to be turned, as desired, into a personalised place of either retreat or productivity.

His emotion was raw. His words were real. He was who he is.
What else would you expect from Allen Iverson, especially on the night he appeared at The Center for the first time since being named a member of the 2016 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class?
“It brings back a lot of memories,” said Iverson of standing in the building where he played all of his home games during a Sixers career that spanned parts of 12 seasons. “It gives me chill bumps. This is me. This is my environment. This place made me a household name. This is the place that little kids fell in love with me.”
On Monday morning in Houston, Iverson was formally elected to the Hall of Fame. His enshrinement will be made official in Springfield, Massachusetts on Friday, September 9th. Shaquille O’Neal, Yao Ming, Tom Izzo, and Sheryl Swoopes are among the other inductees.
Friday, amidst some tears and laughs, Iverson spoke from the heart about this latest, and arguably most distinguished, individual honor. Because Iverson tells it so well, so passionately, and so deeply, the main objective of this article is to simply provide context to many of the Answer’s comments from Friday, and let them stand as they were delivered during a 20-minute press conference.
“This is a tribute to everybody that helped me accomplish it,” Iverson said. “My family, my friends, my fans, everybody that stuck with me through my ups and downs. The ride definitely wasn’t perfect. I made a whole bunch of mistakes just like people make. But people look at us like we’re not human, and don’t understand that we bleed just like them, and we have feeling, just like everybody else.”
At one point on Friday, Iverson got choked up when talking about the pride he feels when family and friends express how proud they are of him.
“I want so much for the people that stuck with me through the whole time, I want them to feel good about it. I want them to feel like they’re Hall of Famers. I want everybody that had an impact on my life, and that had an impact on me trying to get to this goal right here, I want them to feel good about it. Everybody that was with me throughout the ride, I want them to be proud of themselves for helping me get to such a high level.”
The highlights and achievements that the six-foot guard from Georgetown racked up while playing the game of basketball are plentiful, and well documented. It would be unrealistic and unjust to attempt to recap them all in a single article.
Iverson, however, did point to one particular ritual that stood out to him the most among all of the memorable experiences he created and lived through while on the court, or “dance floor,” as he put it, in Philadelphia.
“Probably when I put my hand up to my ear, the response that I got from doing it,” Iverson said. “I knew how those people on that side of the court would respond, and that was one of the like greatest moments for me that sent chills all through my body, because I knew that they felt like I was feeling. If not more, they were excited like I was. That’s one of the greatest moments as far as that court, but just that court period. In Philadelphia, period. Just me giving everything I had night in and night out to those fans, these fans, because I know they were there supporting me for 48 minutes.”
Such interplay exemplified the seemingly unshakable, entirely natural bond that was built, and continues to exist, between Iverson and the city.
“It’s a relationship that we might not ever see again, besides with [Michael Jordan], and his fans in Chicago,” said Iverson, a native of Virginia Beach. “It’s a long lasting relationship. We connect. They love me because I gave everything I had, and they honor that, and I love them for what they gave me. It will never be nothing like the relationship like I have with the fans in Philadelphia. I don’t think it’s possible. I don’t think it will happen.”
In addition to repeatedly stressing his appreciation for supporters and fans throughout Friday’s media gathering, Iverson wove another prominent theme into his remarks. He believes he has undergone substantial personal growth and development.
