“My mum recently told me that dampness and stagnation often happen during spring, and this will cause appetite loss. Is there a relationship between dampness and stagnation?”
CheckCheckCin: In Cantonese, the two words that represent dampness and stagnation are ‘sap zai’, which also means nuisance or hassle. From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, dampness and stagnation are indeed related.
The body relies on the spleen and stomach to circulate fluid and dampness, so when these organs fail to function optimally, stagnation can occur. Symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, appetite loss, and abdominal gassiness would then emerge.
Individual with these symptoms should eat more meals but in a smaller quantity, and avoid consuming heavily seasoned, fried, oily, and sticky foods, as well as those with high satiety. Alternatively, you can try drinking this tea to improve your appetite and soothe the circulation of the qi.
Calamansi and dried citrus peel tea
Effects: promotes qi and stimulates appetite. Relieves lack of appetite and vomiting.
Ingredients: 3 calamansi, 1 dried citrus peel, 1 drop honey
Preparation: Rinse the ingredients. Cut the calamansi into half. Slice the dried citrus peel. Place all ingredients into thermos and add in hot water and steep for 10 minutes until aroma develops. Add honey. This tea can be re-brewed until flavour weakens.

元宵湯圓養生吃
明天就是正月十五元宵節,傳統習俗是吃湯圓,有團團圓圓的意思。湯圓由糯米粉搓成皮,包裹不同口味餡料製作而成,從中醫角度來看,湯圓甜膩,容易生濕,糯米雖暖胃,但性質黏滯滋膩難以消化,想應節只宜淺嚐,最好配合體質選擇最適合自己口味的湯圓,盡量減輕身體負擔。
湯圓餡:
黑芝麻 — 芝麻有益肝腎、養血烏髮、潤腸通便功效,尤其適合陰虛、陽虛、氣虛、血虛人士食用。
豆沙 — 豆沙由紅豆製成,紅豆具補血和胃功效,適合陰虛、陽虛、氣虛、血虛人士食用,能改善氣血虛弱情況。
花生 — 有補氣潤肺、健脾開胃功效,適合氣虛、血虛、食慾差或哺乳中的產婦進食。
問:湯圓餡流心的比較好吃?
答:流心湯圓無論視覺效果或是口感都比較好,但流心效果是因為加入了豬油或牛油,實在不宜多吃。
問:湯底越薑越好?
答:薑湯湯圓是不少人的至愛,薑湯加入了生薑和片糖炮製,生薑性熱能發汗散寒,片糖則有暖胃功效,比較適合陽虛、偏寒體質人士食用;但濕熱體質、或者身體有偏熱症狀例如喉嚨痛、口瘡、暗瘡、便秘等則不宜食用,以免火上加油。

Choose fillings based on body constitution
Make healthy sweet dumplings for Lantern Festival
Tomorrow will be the Lantern Festival, the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar calendar. Traditionally, people will eat sweet dumplings, or ‘tang yuan‘ in Mandarin, on this day, as it symbolizes reunion. Sweet dumplings are made by rolling glutinous rice flour into a dough and then stuffing with different types of filling.
From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, sweet dumplings are sweet, have a high satiety effect, and can cause dampness in the body easily. Though glutinous rice can warm the stomach, its stickiness can cause indigestion. One can enjoy sweet dumplings but should only consume in a small quantity. Opt for fillings that are appropriate for our body constitution to help reduce the burden on the body.
Fillings in sweet dumplings:
Black sesame - nourishes the liver and kidney, nourishes blood and improve hair quality, moistens the intestine to relieve constipation. Suitable for people with yin deficiency, yang deficiency, qi deficiency and blood asthenia
Red bean paste - made with red bean which replenishes blood and stomach. Suitable for people with yin deficiency, yang deficiency, qi deficiency and blood asthenia. It can improve the weakness of qi and blood.
Peanut - replenishes the lungs and qi, strengthens the spleen to stimulate appetite. Suitable for those with qi deficiency, blood asthenia, poor appetite or nursing mothers.
Q: Sweet dumplings with lava fillings taste better?
A: Lava fillings give us visual pleasure and can satisfy our taste buds, but they are made of butter or lard. Hence, one should not consume sweet dumplings with lava fillings excessively.
Q: The more ginger in the sweet soup, the better it is?
A: Many people enjoy drinking ginger soup, which is made from fresh ginger and slab sugar. Fresh ginger is warm in nature and can induce sweating and dispel cold, whereas slab sugar can warm the stomach. Hence, this soup is suitable for individuals with yang deficiency, and those with a colder body constitution.
However, individuals with a damp-heat body constitution, or those with heat-related symptoms such as sore throat, canker sore, acne, and constipation should avoid drinking this soup, as it might aggravate the symptoms.

夏日宜吃酸味水果
春天飲食宜甘不宜酸,來到夏天是時候調整飲食餐單了,夏天天氣炎熱,人體出汗多易耗氣傷津,應該適量食用酸味食物,因為酸性收斂,可預防流汗過多而耗氣傷陰,而吃酸味食物時口水分泌增加,又能達生津止渴、健胃消食的功效,所以在夏天可以多進食酸味水果,選擇時可留意水果的寒熱平屬性,以配合自己的體質,例如身體偏寒的人多選擇屬性溫熱的水果,身體偏熱的人多選擇屬性寒涼的水果,盡量令身體保持平衡狀態就是養生之道。
石榴 — 性熱,味甘酸,具生津止渴、澀腸止瀉、收歛固澀作用,適合口舌乾燥、時有乾咳、腹瀉者食用。惟感冒咳嗽、糖尿病患者不宜多吃。
番石榴-性溫,味酸,清熱止瀉,適合腹瀉、糖尿病患者食用。
檸檬 — 性微溫,味甘酸,能開胃消滯、生津止渴、消暑、安胎,能紓緩炎夏無胃口及消化不良情況,亦有潤膚及改善色斑等美顏功效。
菠蘿 — 性平,味甘酸澀,具有消暑解渴、消食止瀉的作用,尤其進食太多肉類和肥甘厚味的食物,吃菠蘿可以消滯、助消化及利尿。惟糖尿病患者不宜進食。
士多啤梨 — 性涼,味甘酸,能消暑清熱、生津止渴,能紓緩喉嚨乾、喉嚨痛或身體偏熱症狀。惟脾胃虛寒、容易胃痛、腹瀉者不宜多吃 。
奇異果 — 性寒,味甘酸,能清熱生津、健脾、利尿,紓緩無胃口、消化不良、欲吐、痔瘡等症狀。注意女士脾胃虛寒容易腹瀉、有寒性痛經不易多服。
山楂 — 性溫,味酸,能開胃助消化及降血脂,對於食滯及消化不良都非常有效。注意氣虛體質,又或是胃酸分泌較多的人,喝得太多反而會引起胃痛等症狀,所以最好還是在飯後、吃得太多肉後或是覺得有滯意時才食用。

You should have sour food as acidity helps the body conserve and avoid over perspiration that can hurt yin. Saliva secretion increases when you eat sour food, and it can achieve the effects of relieving thirst, strengthening the stomach and aiding digestion. For example, people with cold body types should choose fruits with warm and hot nature, and people with hot body type should choose fruits with cold and cool nature. Keeping the body in a balanced state is one way to keep healthy.
Pomegranate- hot in nature with a sour and sweet taste. Helps to promote fluid production and relieve thirst, and relieve diarrhea. Suitable for dry mouth and tongue, occasional coughing, and diarrhea. Not suitable for those suffering from flu and cough, or those with diabetes.
Guava- warm in nature with a sour taste, can clear heat and relieve diarrhea. Suitable for those with diarrhea or diabetes.
Lemon- slightly warm in nature with a sour taste, can stimulate appetite and aid digestion, promote fluid production and quench thirst, clear summer heat, and stabilise pregnancy. It alleviates summer heat related symptoms such as lack of appetite and indigestion, and it can also moisten skin and improve discoloration on skin.
Pineapple - mild in nature with a sweet, sour and astringent taste. It can clear summer heat, relieve thirst, aid digestion and relieve diarrhea, especially good for after consuming too much meat or oily and fatty food. Eating pineapple can relieve indigestion and promote diuresis. It is not suitable for diabetic patients.
Strawberry- cool in nature with a sour and sweet taste, can dispel summer heat and clear heat, promote fluid production and quench thirst. Eating strawberries can alleviate dry throat, sore throat or overall heat-related symptoms in the body. Those with asthenic cold stomach and spleen, prone to abdominal pain and diarrhea should eat less.
Kiwi- cold in nature with a sour and sweet taste, and can clear heat and promote fluid production, and quench thirst. It alleviates lack of appetite, indigestion, nausea, and hemorrhoids. Note that it is not suitable for ladies with asthenic spleen and stomach, prone to diarrhea and has cold type menstrual pain.
Chinese Hawthorn- warm in nature with a sour taste, and helps to stimulate appetite, aid digestion and lower blood lipids. It is especially effective for those with indigestion from overeating. Those with qi deficiency body type or those with too much gastric acid secretion may have abdominal pain if they have too much Chinese Hawthorne. It is best to eat it after meal, after eating a lot of meat or when you feel indigestion.
