“Jesus said to him, “Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”” (John 13:10 WEB)
When Jesus referred to a person who has bathed, He was talking about a believer who has been washed clean by the blood of Jesus.
In Israel during Jesus’ time, they wore sandals outside and the ground is very sandy and rocky there.
When they came into a house, they would usually wash their feet to clean it.
As we go about our daily walk, we are bombarded by worldly ideologies and frustrations.
Nowadays everywhere you go you hear fearful words about the virus, and worrisome words about the state of the economy.
These are all the dirt that clings to our mind and if not washed off, they will accumulate and become a thick, unhealthy layer of grime, poisoning our spiritual health and affecting all parts of our life.
How then do we wash off this dirt? Using an actual cloth and soap won’t work.
“that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,” (Ephesians 5:26 NKJV)
We need to use the water of God’s word. By prioritizing some time everyday to read or listen to the Gospel of Grace, the worldly thoughts will be replaced by Godly ones.
It would be preferable to do it all day long. It can be as simple as finding a verse or passage of the day and meditating on it as you go from place to place.
Just like how the Jews wash their feet every time they went indoors, so should you wash yourself with God’s word everywhere you go.
“Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
(Romans 12:2 WEB)
As believers, our spirits are already perfect clean, holy and righteous, but our body and soul (mind, will and emotions) are still being progressively renewed daily.
As we replace worldly beliefs with godly ones as revealed in the Bible, we are being transformed.
The word for “transformed” comes from the Greek word “metamorpho” where we get our English word metamorphosis: the process where a larvae in a cocoon becomes a butterfly.
It’s a permanent and lasting change, and you won’t revert back to the previous form after undergoing this type of spiritual metamorphosis.
Everyday as we replace wrong beliefs with right ones, we are becoming more like our Lord Jesus.
“If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14 WEB)
When teaching His disciples to wash one another’s feet, Jesus called Himself Lord and Teacher.
Because He is Lord, we as His subjects are to submit to His commands.
Secondly, because He is Teacher, He has given us an example for us to follow.
We are taught to wash one another’s feet as well. When you see someone bogged down by the cares and troubles of this world, encourage them with a godly thought from God’s word.
By doing so, you are fulfilling Jesus’ command and emulating His example. Whose feet can you wash today? Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in this. Let’s all get clean together!
