Thank you YB Hannah Yeoh
Media Statement By Hannah Yeoh Dated 4 December 2020
I refer to the statement made by the Deputy Home Minister, Ismail Mohamed Said as reported by Malaysiakini in a news report entitled “M'sian women cannot confer nationality on children due to national security”.
https://m.malaysiakini.com/news/553595
(1) This is an archaic law and policy discriminating even our very own Malaysian women.
(2) During our 22 months in Putrajaya, our Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail wrote to the Home Minister asking for this to be reformed. No positive feedback from the Home Minister then who is the current Prime Minister.
(3) This conservative policy hurts the children of Malaysian women. They should rightfully be Malaysians.
(4) This discriminatory policy reduces options for Malaysian women seeking divorces, protection or relief because it assumes the presence of the father figure in a happy family setting. The reality is not like that for many Malaysian women. Those who have to leave their union are often stuck between a rock and a hard place because their children do not have citizenship in their homeland.
(5) Malaysian women bring equal contribution to our economy and social development and they ought to be treated like their male counterparts.
(6) Citizenship should be granted to every child whose either parent or adopted parent is Malaysian, regardless of the marital status of the parent and the gender of the Malaysian parent or the place of birth of the child; including foundling children.
(7) The Home Ministry must expedite reform in this area especially in the Covid-19 pandemic era because many seeming options for travel as to the place of giving birth were no options to begin with due to the shutting of our borders.
(8) Let me remind the Home Ministry that what is of a greater threat to national security is corruption within their enforcement system as seen in the recent arrest of immigration and police officers. Innocent children cannot and will not be a danger to our nation.

Did you know that women medical professionals have been an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic? The pandemic has not only been a stark reminder of the shared security concern on the global health, also exposed deep inequalities across health and social systems at global and national levels, including gender disparities, that weaken our ability to respond effectively.
Promoting women’s empowerment has always been one of AIT’s focus and an important U.S.-Taiwan shared values. We are pleased to share an information about a virtual forum “Women in Global Health Security” organized by Foreign Policy magazine, Women in Global Health and the Wagner Foundation. The program is a dynamic, high-level digital summit illuminating the need for gender-transformative policy within global health security.

Digital Minister and self-taught coding whiz Audrey Tang shares her unconventional life story – from gender identity to hacktivism, why she chose the name “Audrey 唐鳳,” and what conservative anarchism means to her.
Having come of age together with Taiwanese democracy and the Internet, Tang relates how she took her education online after dropping out of junior high. Since then, Tang has striven to make knowledge as accessible, transparent, and collaborative as possible. She explains how open data initiatives (e.g. vTaiwan, g0v) can help citizens build consensus, participate in the legislative process, and ultimately, govern themselves.
Today’s episode is hosted by J.R. Wu - Chief of the Secretariat for INDSR (Institute for National Defense and Security Research) in Taiwan. Wu is a former journalist with nearly two decades of media experience in the US and Asia. She has led news bureaus for Reuters and Dow Jones.
