Central Market 中環街市 is finally opened after it ceased operation for 18 YEARS!
It is a pity to see that this Grade III historic building no longer looks like the very chaotic local fresh market we all once know. After years of revitalisation, costing HKD$500 million 五億 (USD$64.1 million) 😮 , it has become a culture and shopping hub with cafes and small shops.
New Walking video in Central Market is ready: https://youtu.be/vRBZmty5dhc
The Central Market 中環街市 was built in 1939 in Bauhaus style. During the Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong between 1941 to 1945, its Chinese name was changed to 中央(middle) 街市 and kept until 1993. The Market stopped operation since 2003 until the government announced plan to revitalise the Market in 2009. After 18 years…. the Market is open to the public again!

You better go back home earlier tonight as hungry ghosts wander all around Hong Kong TODAY!
Check out new YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/IByOeRCLWfE
In the Chinese society, the seventh month in the lunar calendar is considered as "Ghost month". The gates of hell open and restless spirits roam the world. Today is the 14th day of the seventh lunar month, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival 盂蘭節. People appease the angry ghost after the ghost have wander the earth for two weeks. You will find locals burning paper offerings in Tin can on the roadsides everywhere in these few weeks. Food like Tofu, and bean sprout, which are easy to chew, will also be offered to make sure the ghost are not hungry so that they will not get angry. (You can buy a bowl of food for the ghosts including Tofu, bean sprout and rice in the wet market)
We also avoid water activities (Older generation says the water ghosts will pull you down to the water) and going back home late.
You used to see huge ceremonies held around HK on the Ghost month. But many is still cancelled this year due to the strict social distancing rule. The photos here show you the ceremony held in 中區卅間街坊盂蘭會 Staunton street, Central in 2019.
There was one held in Sycamore Playground in Tai Kok Tsui this year (ended on 19/8). The Chinese Opera started at 6pm, so I decided to go back home earlier instead 😅
The Chinese opera is actually for the ghosts to watch such that they won’t wander around and cause trouble!

Happy Chinese Valentine’s Day!
We went to one of the only 2 temples left in Hong Kong that still celebrate the Seven Sister festival 七夕 - 七聖古廟 Seven Sisters temple this morning to see how people celebrate the festival.
This was a love story between 牛郎, an ordinary cowherd in earth and 織女, the daughter of the Mother of Heaven 王母娘娘. The Mother of Heaven got so angry when she knew her daughter got married and gave birth to children with an ordinary man - the cowherd 牛郎, so she sent minions to bring her daughter back to heaven.
The cowherd 牛郎 brought the two kids and chased after. The Heaven of Mother immediately made a river between the Heaven and earth to separate the two. Magpies 🐦 on land was touched and formed a Magpie bridge allowing the cowherd 牛郎 to cross. Their love eventually moved the Mother of Heaven and she allowed the couples to meet on the Magpie Bridge once a year on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, that is today.
This was once a very popular festival among young woman in the past that they prayed for embroidery skills 巧手 and a good husband. When do they offer to 七姐,the 七姐盤 Seven sister Basin in the second picture with high heels, handbags, perfumes, blush and makeup powder - anything feminine. YouTube video is coming up tomorrow to tell you more! Stay tuned!
