Did you know that February is Black History Month in the United States? During Black History Month we celebrate the diversity of the United States and the world, through recognizing the contributions made by African Americans in all areas of American society. One way we celebrate this diversity year-round is through the establishment of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). To kick-off the countdown to its grand opening next fall, the NMAAHC came alive in November for three nights as the façade of the building was illuminated with moving images in a spectacular display. The event commemorated three important milestones in African American history: the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the 13th Amendment (abolishing slavery), the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, and the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act (prohibiting racial discrimination in voting).
