A dining experience that truly respects and honours Asian cuisine. I actually felt a bit emotional during this meal because each dish has elements and techniques from the East and West, yet you can't necessarily categorize the dish as either - this really hit a soft spot for me as a mixed culture kid growing up.
While the dishes were modern, there was always a sense of familiarity that reminded me of my family and the round table family dinners we’d have together. The fact that the squid is cut and scored in a traditional floral Chinese pattern and that pineapple tarts made its way into a fine dining menu made me really happy.
I loved every part of this meal by Woo Wai Leong & the lovely Restaurant Ibid team. Big kudos to my friend Hsu Ken for bringing me here and introducing me to one of my new favourite restaurants (not to mention...raising the bar way too high for a spontaneous celebratory weekday dinner lol).

PART 04 - Traveling around the… table - marvelous exotic food in Tainan
Everybody knows Tainan is famous for unlimited number of snacks, night markets and traditional, special Tainan foods. But, what if somehow you want to take a break from that and want to try something truly exotic? Do you need to go to the airport and fly to another country? Well, that’s an option. But, don’t worry - there’s no need to look for your passport if you’re already in Tainan. Why? Because there are lots of mouth-watering dishes waiting for you right here in Tainan. Together we can explore a few of them. So are you ready?
Option number one: How about some Indian food?
瑪哈印度餐廳Maharaja Indian Restaurant
From time to time I crave some Indian food, and Maharaja is a good option. They have decorations that transports you to an Indian Palace, they play Bollywood music videos in the background and they have a solid menu - from Indian curries, kebabs, naan (Indian bread you can soak in sauces) and also typical drinks (mango lassi, Indian spiced teas. They also have starters, for example samosas - Indian fried dumplings. The food is really good, I got my favorite dishes including: palak paneer - spinach and cottage cheese sauce, chicken tikka masala, yellow masala lamb curry, chicken kebabs and more. All these delicious dishes were nicely washed with a mango lassi - Indian style of yogurt. Gotta admit - I loved it.
Option number two: Are you craving for some good Japanese food? Great - I have an excellent place just for you.
兩斤家廚房1.2KG Kitchen
Roasted beef steak, Pork fillet, Japanese bbq beef, cheese donburi, Japanese fried chicken (the difference between Taiwanese and Japanese style is that the one from Japan is juicier, Taiwanese style is usually crispier). You can also find hot pots and other dishes at 1.2KG. I love all the dishes - especially the steak.. I am usually a bit sceptical before ordering cheese in restaurants in Taiwan, but the bbq cheese donburi was truly delicious - hands down.
Apart from the tasty dishes, the interior of the restaurant is really stylish and the ambiance is great. You can really feel that the owner put lots of effort into it. You can take lots of great shots if you bring your camera along. The decoration is a bit of a fusion between Japanese and European styles. It feels really good :)
Option number three: Would you like to try the most famous south east asian cuisine here in Tainan? Let’s go Thai then!
泰味食足A Taste of Thailand
The place is well decorated and a cute elephant statue welcomes you from the street. I am always happy to eat some Thai food, and this restaurant made me happy as well.
Usually when I go to Thai restaurants I order my favorite meals: stir-fried spicy minced beef, shrimp pancake and green curry. They also have quite a selection of seafood dishes, steamed fish and steamed shrimps. I started with green papaya salad - it’s a healthy crispy dish full of veggies and unripe papaya. Yummy! Apart from that I tried the rest and I must say all were really good - but the spicy minced beef remains my favorite. If you are in Shanhua this restaurant is definitely a place to visit!
How about some dessert?
光芒果子.小旅行 義式冰淇淋Sunny Mango Gelato
Yujing district of Tainan is mostly famous for its mangoes. But there is way more to discover in that area. Apart from the gorgeous views you can also visit Yujing Old Street. One of the highlights of that place is a real gelato shop.
What is gelato? It’s Italian word that means “frozen” but most commonly it’s known as Italian ice cream. The difference between gelato and ice cream is very subtle - basically gelato is more icy and thick, ice cream is more creamy and soft. There is quite a selection of flavors - from classic ones (fruit, chocolate) to very special flavors (Sun Moon Lake tea, Taiwan beer flavor). Also, I believe the flavors change from time to time, so each time you come you can get some surprises. My favorite gelato was passion fruit, mango and sesame. But let’s be honest - everybody likes a different flavor, so the only way to find out which is your favorite is…. going to Sunny Mango Gelato!
Feel free to ask any questions that you have, feel free to share and tag friends that haven’t been to Tainan before or recently, and need to go there with you and… and…. and make sure you stay tuned because there are more stories coming soon!

South East Asian market grows stronger as foodies hunt for more "exotic" cuisine through uncharted waters.
#FoodiesOfficialAsia #BangkokFoodies #LaosFoodies
"While Laotian food may have similarities to Thai dishes, there are ingredients particular to Laotian cuisine, especially plant-based herbs, ferns, and leaves. Nearly everything is obtained from personal gardens, the river, local farms, and the forest. And while the food can be spicy, it’s more important to balance the flavours: not too sweet, not too sour, and spiced just right."
Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted - watch the six-part series on Mondays 8.30pm AEST from August 5 on National Geographic.
Perched precariously on the rugged shoreline of the Mekong River in Laos, Gordon Ramsay tries his hand at cast-net fishing at Khone Falls, considered the widest falls in the world. “It’s so dangerous, just at the edge of the rock,” he says, “I was hoping for lunch, but this wasn’t what I had in mind.” The great volume of the falls—9,463,529 litres per second, is nearly double the volume of Niagara Falls.

Growing up with Thai blood, Muslim background, and a British stepfather throughout Top Russell’s life has always confused him. On the other side, Michelle Goh was born in East Malaysia Kuching which is also a cultural mixing pot. Their constant change of knowledge of food has forced them to go on a search: What is Authenticity? What is the flavor of their identity? On the journey, they created TER’RA.
Top, receiving 2018 Best Young Chef / Thailand, teamed up with Michelle, patisserie chef from Suhring, 2 Michelin Star. TER’RA soon created an excitement of “Modern Territorial
Cuisine” and became the hottest Pop-up in Bangkok. Using 100% Thai ingredient, creating Modern western dishes, and focusing on the search of forgotten territorial produce. Now Top & Michelle is bringing TER’RA to Taiwan, using the concept of modern territorial cuisine to put Taiwan’s abundant agricultural landscape, earth & sea together to start a journey of discovery.

Sate Tuna Fish Pieces and Sate Minced Tuna with Coconut Paste grilled over charcoal.
Satay, modern Indonesian and Malay spelling of sate, is a dish of seasoned, skewered and grilled meat, served with a sauce. Satay may consist of diced or sliced chicken, goat, mutton, beef, pork, fish, other meats, or tofu; the more authentic version uses skewers from the midrib of the coconut palm frond, although bamboo skewers are often used. These are grilled or barbecued over a wood or charcoal fire, then served with various spicy seasonings.
Satay originated in Java, Indonesia. It is available almost anywhere in Indonesia, where it has become a national dish. It is also popular in many other Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, the Philippines, East Timor as well as in Suriname and the Netherlands, as Indonesia and Suriname are former Dutch colonies.
Satay is a very popular delicacy in Indonesia; the country's diverse ethnic groups' culinary arts (see Indonesian cuisine) have produced a wide variety of satays. In Indonesia, satay can be obtained from a traveling satay vendor, from a street-side tent-restaurant, in an upper-class restaurant, or during traditional celebration feasts. In Malaysia, satay is a popular dish—especially during celebrations—and can be found throughout the country. In Southern Philippines it is known as satti.
Close analogues are yakitori from Japan, shish kebab from Turkey and the Middle East, shashlik from the Caucasus, chuanr from China, and sosatie from South Africa.
Indonesia is the home of satay (known as sate in Indonesian and pronounced similar to the English "satay"), and satay is a widely renowned dish in almost all regions of Indonesia; it is considered the national dish and one of Indonesia's best dishes. Satays, in particular, are a staple in Indonesian cuisine, served everywhere from street carts to fine dining establishments, as well as in homes and at public gatherings. As a result, many variations have been developed throughout the Indonesian Archipelago.
Sate Lilit is a satay variant from Balinese cuisine. This satay is made from minced pork, fish, chicken, beef, or even turtle meat, which is then mixed with grated coconut, thick coconut milk, lemon juice, shallots, and pepper. The spiced minced meat is wound around bamboo, sugar cane or lemongrass sticks, it is then grilled on charcoal. Unlike skewers of other satay recipes which is made narrow and sharp, the bamboo skewer of sate lilit is flat and wide. This wider surface allowed the minced meat to stick and settle. The term lilit in Balinese and Indonesian means "to wrap around", which corresponds to its making method to wrapping around instead of skewering the meat.
