Ali started talking at the age of 9 months, like Fatimah. But, he already began copying some of our words when he was only 6 months old. Guess what Ali’s very first word was? ‘MAH’ (Fatimah)! He was the earliest among our 3 children to start talking. Unlike Fatimah, his style is more to what we call ‘The Master Immitator’. He mimics almost everything from his No. 1 Idol, Fatimah! However, he is known for his randomness. He will store things he’s observed that he finds catchy in his memory bank, then waits for the right moment & shoots his bullets, which normally makes people laugh! This is the biggest difference between Ali & Fatimah, because Fatimah will only speak her own mind! It’s impossible to put words into her mouth. This is why we say she’s ‘BORN TO TALK’!

We’ve received lots of requests from other parents out there to share our tips on how we train our children to speak from an early stage. Here’s some pieces of our experience...

Rule No. 1 - AVOID BABY TALK. We always talk to our children in an adult manner, even though baby talk sounds cute & tempting. We started talking to them throughout the pregnancy stages. When they were born, they recognised our voices right away as we had been communicating with them daily. We also used different intonations to attract their attention.

Rule No. 2 - KEEP CALM & CARRY ON TALKING. Some children might take longer than others to start talking. Don’t give up! Keep calm & carry on talking to your children every day - talk, talk, talk & never stop talking! Never push your child to talk. This will only make them refuse more. Some ‘superstars’ prefer to take their own sweet time to let their voice be heard!

Rule No. 3 - LISTEN. When our children start talking, give them your attention. Engage with them - avoid 1 way communication. Let them know that you are very interested in what they have to say.

Today I decided to try to learn to speak Japanese by watching the entire first season of Naruto in Japanese in a single day, 10 continuous hours, with no English subtitles. The idea is: how much Japanese can I learn by completely immersing myself in Japanese with absolutely no English at all? Learning like a baby would? I know there's a lot of debate over whether it's possible to learn Japanese by watching anime, and in this video we’re going to find out. It’s a crazy experiment that I’m not really expecting to succeed very well but I think the results will be interesting.
Unfortunately, due to copyright reasons I’m not able to include any of the original video or audio from the Naruto episodes, but I will be including cards that summarize the plot as I watch the videos, and also discussing my experience learning Japanese along with any words or phrases I pick up as we go through the videos.
