SUNHAT / RA’ONG ☀️ Our ancestors referred to the sky as the big sunhat dome, and all earthly creation lay under it ☁️ In the late 1960s My aunty Sina’ Rang wrote the words for this sunhat “Selamat Pakai From Kelabit Girl” (happy wearing, from a Kelabit girl”). Her sister, my aunty Lasong, did the threading of the beads. The beads were a gift from Tony Masonbee who was group headmaster of Baram schools. Sina’ Rang was a student at the school whilst her sister was a cook. The pattern, made of abstract designs and words is typical of basketry patterns of the era of 1960s. They were keen to weave and bead messages that reflected their newly found literacy skills in English and Bahasa ☁️ all that info was passed to me by my mum who is a researcher & also through my cousins kakak Tracy and Bann (Sina’ Rang’s daughters). The hat is now a collection of the British Museum. Kinda lovely how it’s come a full circle and I’m so happy to have it on the cover of my latest album, Sky Songs. I started with abstract then combined some elements that I found interesting for the final drawing. It’s not a super refined work but I absolutely loved it:) you guys can try with songs that you like as well! Have fun!

This year, from April to August, was the darkest time, but also the transformational moment of my life when this channel, "AnDyWuMUSICLAND," literally came from death to life. We've learnt how to "Fight For Love" in 2015, how to deal with the loss when "We Were Young" in 2016, but every time, in next phase of our lives, there are always different, unexpected challenges for us to confront.

The most important thing is: how do we deal with the struggle? When I was trapped in the hard feelings and asking "what have I done," "why did this world do this to me?" I almost didn't wanna fight anymore. I truly said a couple of times that "I wouldn’t do mashups anymore." and "There's no way I would release Mashup 2017." However, seeing how Ariana Grande fought against the terrorists with "One Love Manchester" gave me the whole new point of view. I realized that we could be sad, scared and devastated, but after all, we still need love, music, and connections with people to give us a cathartic experience. That's how we become and stronger.

"If we never learn, we been here before. Why are we always stuck and running from the bullets?" We cannot choose the challenges we are faced with, but if there's love, we can steer how it goes. In the end, we all have to thank, "Perfect Struggle," to make us perfect, and move on to the next stage of life.

(In August, I also made a short film called "Reconnection," directed & written by me, using an abstract way to express the intimate feeling of me during the dark time. And this film will be premiered on this channel soon as well. Hope you will like it!)
