投資者看AI(一)
人工智能(AI)是最熱門的投資概念,没有之一。包含範圍很廣,近乎無限;綜合性功能包括視覺、聲音識別、語言處理等,以及更多垂直式應用例如無人駕駛、智能家居、電商廣告、醫療診斷、金融交易等。
有些新經濟板塊較受政策影響,例如再生能源和電動車依賴補貼,所以只要一減,馬上受到極大影響。但AI發展極少依賴政策支持,非線性增長的臨界點就在當前,未來五年的複式增長(CAGR)最少35%。
硬件技術更重要
何謂AI?沒有一個準確定義,最初只有一個Turing Test,實驗設計由一個人經文字或語音跟一個電腦系統傾談,另設一位獨立評判,如他不能分辨哪一方是人類、哪一方是電腦,那麼此系統就可被稱為擁有AI。此標準只可稱為一個功能上的定義,並沒有任何設計和結構上的定義。
近年AI迅速發展,有賴於Deep Neural Network(DNN)和Deep Learning的突破。多倫多大學的Geoff Hinton 和 Alex Krizhevsky 就是DNN先驅。軟件固然重要,但更重要的是硬件技術的發展,電腦的線性計算速度老早就超越人類億倍以上,但人類智慧的特色和直到現時的優勢在於我們腦袋由數以萬億計的neurons(神經元)所連接而形成的complexity(複雜性)。
在醫學、哲學以至宗教上,人類的最大特徵consciousness(意識)都可能只是這個complex network的一個現象!但一個具意識的觀察者亦是量子物理學必備的一個元素,有了「他」才能打破Schrodinger's cat 的生死之謎。
過去PC年代的CPU計算方式是以serial(序列)為主,後來發展至multi-cores(多核)來做一些parallel processing(平行計算)。不是所有計算都適合用平行計算,很多傳統數學應用更需要線性速度。但大部分跟AI有關的應用,如臉孔辨認,就需要模仿人腦的 massively parallel processing。
GPU成發展主流
因此AI研究者開始改變過去只單用CPU,改用CPU+GPU(Graphics Processing Unit)的設計。GPU本來主要功能是提升處理大量圖像訊息的速度,每個計算較簡單,亦適合同步進行,所以GPU通常採用數以百計的多核設計。從前GPU主要應用只限於遊戲圖像,後來無心插柳,現已成AI發展的主流方向。研究顯示,CPU+GPU的AI系統的學習速度比單一CPU系統快10倍比上,成本更減低上百倍。
名義上Intel是GPU一哥,市佔率高達70%,但並非獨立的 graphics solution(圖像開發商),都是跟其他功能連在一起的。獨立GPU生產商最主要有兩間,Nvidia和AMD,過去兩年股價都大升數倍。Nvidia是真正的GPU領先者,最大的優勢可能是它的CUDA平台和API,廣泛在大學教授,愈多人慣用了就愈難改變,形成network effect。我仍然看好未來兩年GPU的前景,但嫌Nvidia和AMD的股價都太貴,要耐心等待較深調整才可再次買入。
但長遠來講我未必那麼看好GPU的發展。首先所有龍頭科技公司如蘋果、Intel、Google或Tesla都知道AI的重要性,都不想過度依賴外來GPU供應商,最佳例子是近日蘋果決定自己設計GPU,不再用英國移動GPU生產商Imagination的產品,Imagination股價即時暴跌七成!原來蘋果早已挖走數十名Imagination的骨幹工程人員,可見蘋果的生意多難做,一點人情味都沒有。
CPU+GPU亦非唯一的可行設計,有人採用CPU+FPGA(Field-Programmable Gate Array),設計上FPGA 比GPU更靈活,電子線路都可由軟件更改,但成本較高,且平行計算能力較弱,所以較適合在設計prototype(原型)階段時使用。主要公司有Xilinx和被Intel收購了的Altera。
不會由一家獨大
更大挑戰將來自CPU+ASIC(Application-Specific Integrated Circuit),AI應用範圍太廣,很多垂直式應用如無人駕駛和智能聲控助手,更適合度身訂造ASIC,設計彈性雖較低,但成本亦較低,速度反而更快,Intel、Google都在推行此發展方向。很多人喜歡把Nvidia跟Intel比較,幻想GPU變得如CPU般重要,而Nvidia成為GPU一哥,那麼股價亦可能再升3倍,市值直逼Intel。但似乎未來AI市場不會由一家獨大,較接近百花齊放,Nvidia的市佔率絕不會如Intel在PC年代般高達90%。
那麼從投資角度來看,誰才是AI的最大贏家呢?很多人都說AI的成敗取決於數據,所以更多人說Amazon、Google、阿里等互聯網龍頭公司,擁有最多用戶的數據,必將是AI最大贏家。
我並不反對此說法,亦非常看好這些公司的前途,但股價已反映不少利好因素,Amazon P/E過百倍;而Google和阿里20倍出頭,不算昂貴,但看好的主因並非AI。
我認為最大AI贏家將是記載這些大量數據的記憶體公司,主要有四種技術:1)硬盤——舊技術,主要供應商剩下Seagate 和 Western Digital;2) NAND Flash——逐漸取締硬盤,主要有5家供應商:三星、Micron、Hynix、Intel和東芝+Western Digital;3)NOR Flash ——主要應用在手機,目前4家在做,包括Macronix、Cypress、Winbond和Micron;4)DRAM——最重要且無處不在,但反而只有三家,包括三星、Hynix和Micron,三星市佔率更高達50%。下周再詳細分析。
