The U.S. State Department’s Foreign Service Institute ranks Arabic as one of the top 4 most difficult languages to learn for English speakers right up there with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Plus every Arabic-speaking country has its own very different dialect of Arabic, making it even harder to learn. So recently I accepted the challenge and spent 16 hours learning a colloquial form of Gulf Arabic with a Sudanese Dubaian tutor, and then I hit the streets of New York City’s Arabic neighborhoods which contain Arabic speakers from all over the Middle East. This video is the first time I’ve ever tried speaking Arabic with people in real life, and it was an incredible experience exploring these Arabic markets and restaurants in NYC and chatting with locals. If you’d like to check out some of the markets and restaurants featured in the video, some of my favorites are:

The other day we white guys who speak perfect Chinese went out to NYC’s Chinatown to the nail salon. They were “gossiping” about us (in a loving way!), not realizing we spoke Mandarin, and then we totally shocked them by switching to Chinese! We ended up having a really deep and interesting conversation with them in Mandarin and the rare Chinese dialect of Fuzhounese.
So to find out what they are REALLY saying about you at Asian nail salons…just watch the video! It was a funny prank / social experiment but also a really meaningful experience. Plus of course it’s interesting if you’re interested in language learning!

Today I went to NYC’s Brooklyn Chinatown as a clueless white guy and got food and chatted with locals in the rare Chinese dialect of Fuzhounese. They were totally stunned!!! This is Part 2 of our Fuzhounese adventure in NYC’s Brooklyn Chinatown of Sunset Park (8th Avenue).
It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese people’s reactions — both the waiters and the other patrons in Sunset Park were totally shocked! Then we walked around in the Chinese New Year parade and chatted with vendors and other people in Fuzhounese and Mandarin; their reactions were hilarious as well!
