Student Address, National Taiwan University Commencement 2021

.
臺大109屆的畢業生們,畢業快樂,或許現在的我們無法面對面相聚,but I’ll see you down the road!

President Kuan, respected faculty, honored guests and family, and to my fellow NTU graduates who would never have imagined our commencement hosted in this way but still making the best of it, good morning. I am YU-HSUAN LIN, from Department of Political Science.
Rather than wishing the best and the brightest futures to us all, today, I want to urge each and every one of you to join in and contribute to NTU Sweety Course, and put together three amongst the most important credits from these past four years. They are courage, elasticity, and ourselves.
I took a temporary leave in my sophomore year. At minus 30 degrees Celsius, with howling headwinds and blizzards all over the sky, I did cross-country skiing for more than half a month, to challenge myself beyond the limit at the very end of the world. My Antarctic venture may seem absurd to many, but it was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life. At NTU, a campus of endless possibilities, we all have a South Pole in our hearts, an undoubtedly challenging and perhaps laughable goal we yearn to achieve. But do not forget the credit of courage we have gained from these past years, and choose whatever it is that you believe is right.
The next credit, is adaptability. Do you remember the days when our bikes being towed and having to walk or take Ubike 2.0 to class? We learned to adapt through group projects in the classes and private tutoring off-campus, and the ongoing pandemic has added extra loading to our everyday challenges. We thought the previous year was bad, but this year is even worse. We adjust the way we took courses on a rolling basis, trying to catch up from NTU COOL at 1.5x speed. The only thing that doesn't change is change itself. NTU taught us how to adapt to survive.
Last but not least, and arguably the most important credit, is ourselves. That’s right, It’s each and every one of you behind the screens. From a first-year newbie busy planning your double major or transfer, to a senior wandering around anxiously as our peers taking next steps, we work hard painstakingly in fear of falling behind of other, and wonder if we can become the person we want to be. But looking back, after countless rides along the Royal Palm Boulevard, our old selves have already long gone. So, in the future, when the outside world is constantly pushing us to make the best even better and to reach beyond limits, remember to listen to that little voice inside of you. Listen to it as it tells you, there isn’t a certain or definite role you must fulfill, all you need is to have faith in yourself.
Besides the three credits I just mentioned, don’t forget the Petition for Adding Course: our families and professors who accompanied us along our journeys. It requires loves from many to accomplish caprice of one. Thank you for your company and encouragement along the way to allow us to be self-willed boldly.
Lastly, the Spanish flu outbreak after WWI came to my mind recently. It took even more lives than the battle fields. However, it too, eventually ended as time went by. Who knew that after a hundred years, we would also be a part of a similar history? It seems that adversities are awaiting us, but Albert Camus had already reminded us in La Peste “Like wandering shadows that could have acquired substance only by consenting to root themselves in the solid earth of their distress.” When tomorrow comes, in different corners on the Earth, we shall challenge, respond adaptively, and believe in ourselves. With each step that we take, we take with all the love there is within us. Let us contribute to ourselves and to our society, and may our efforts bear the sweetest fruits. Are you ready? Let’s push history forward! Hats off to all NTU graduates of 2021! Although we are unable to celebrate face to face now, I’ll see you down the road! Thank you all!

【Origin Stories - Ho Trung Dung, Chip Chip AW#21】
"My parents are one of my angel investors. They invested without expecting anything in return, despite coming from a relatively poor background. Growing up in Vietnam, they sacrificed a lot just make sure I got a good education and access to better opportunities in life. That’s why I've pushed myself to study and become a lifelong learner.
Although majoring in history during university, I eventually fell in love with computers. I read through every computer magazine, cover to cover. I started to learn how to install windows OS and do everything with the computer, including teaching myself how to program.
I eventually went out to start my own digital marketing agency. We were quite successful, making good money, but growth was slow. The business was very labor intensive and we were not helping that many people.
After 6 months of back and forth, I decided to give it all up to start something new. I had to abandon this image of a successful person. It was one of the toughest decisions I've had to make. But I realized that having a lot of money, a big car, big house, will only make us happy in the short-term.
I’ve always been obsessed with building tech solutions to positively impact many people. That’s why I had to do a startup again, this time focusing on English learning. It's been hard, and tiring, and filled with endless challenges, but I feel much more fulfilled than ever."

Giap's Original Video:https://youtu.be/LgAED4TBPN8
After 1975, hundreds of thousands of people from Vietnam got on boats to leave post war. Those who survived the seas made it to refugee camps all over Southeast Asia, from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, to Hong Kong. And eventually, some had a chance to resettle in America, Canada, Australia, and many parts of Europe. This is a story about three friends who found each other after 40 years. I met Giap in New Jersey a few years ago and he asked me to make a video about his life story. I agreed and after publishing it, two of Giap's refugee camp friends, who were also viewers of this channel, recognized him and saw themselves in my video. They reached out and I connected them to Giap. Giap connected his friends Thanh from Los Angeles and Phuong from San Diego together. They met right away. Giap also met Phuong two years ago in Da Nang. But Giap just met Thanh and the three of them were finally together after 40 years.

Souce from Wikipedia:
Prostitution in Thailand has been common in modern Thailand and its predecessor states for centuries. During the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1351–1767), prostitution was legal and taxed,[1]:2 and the state ran brothels.[2] Since 1960, prostitution in Thailand has been de jure illegal. Nevertheless, it was estimated to be worth US$6.4 billion a year in revenue (2015), accounting for a significant portion of the national GDP.[3]
Sex worker perspectives
Were it not for financial pressures, there is evidence that most sex workers would not choose the work. In Sweden and the Netherlands, where prostitution is "...legal, protected, lucrative and safe,..." it is not a popular profession. Greece provides a recent example of the correlation between prostitution and economic destitution: researchers there estimate that the number of people selling sexual services in Greece has soared by 150 percent since the Greek market collapse in 2008.[81] Many sex workers in those countries are imported from south and Southeast Asia. One Thai university student doing sex work to support herself lamented to an interviewer that "my life doesn't give me choices".[82] The president of Thailand's Foundation for Women notes that, "These women may well have the capacity to separate their sex work from their self-identity." In the words of one of the sex workers she interviewed, "Once I met my customer on a street, he tried to approach me. But I ignored him. What right does he have? Outside a brothel, I am a normal woman."[82]
Some "sex workers" claim that actual sex is a minor part of their occupation. An independent sex worker in Chiang Mai says, "...most of her job is having drinks with customers, only involving sex two or three times a month. Akin to a 'professional girlfriend', ...sex workers provide...company to middle class or foreign men. In return, clients will buy her clothing, take her to watch movies...."[82]
Reasons for the prevalence and toleration of prostitution
Social views
Thai society has its own unique set of often contradictory sexual mores. Visiting a prostitute or a paid mistress is not an uncommon, though not necessarily acceptable, behaviour for men. Many Thai women, for example, believe the existence of prostitution actively reduces the incidence of rape.[14] Among many Thai people, there is a general attitude that prostitution has always been, and will always be, a part of the social fabric of Thailand.[14]
According to a 1996 study, the sexual urge of men is perceived by both Thai men and women as being very much stronger than the sexual urge of women. Where women are thought to be able to exercise control over their desires, the sexual urge of men is seen to be "a basic physiological need or instinct". It is also thought by both Thai men and women that men need "an occasional variation in partners". As female infidelity is strongly frowned upon in Thai society, and, according to a 1993 survey, sexual relationships for single women also meets disapproval by a majority of the Thai population, premarital sex, casual sex and extramarital sex with prostitutes is accepted, expected and sometimes even encouraged for Thai men, the latter being perceived as less threatening to a marriage over lasting relationships with a so-called "minor wife".[57]
Another reason contributing to this issue is that ordinary Thais deem themselves tolerant of other people, especially those whom they perceive as downtrodden. This acceptance has allowed prostitution to flourish without much of the extreme social stigma found in other countries. According to a 1996 study, people in Thailand generally disapprove of prostitution, but the stigma for prostitutes is not lasting or severe, especially since many prostitutes support their parents through their work. Some men do not mind marrying former prostitutes.[58] A 2009 study of subjective well-being of prostitutes found that among the sex workers surveyed, sex work had become normalized.[59].....
