Ovulation is the release of an egg from one of a woman's ovaries. After the egg is released, it travels down the fallopian tube, where fertilization by a sperm cell may occur. Ovulation typically lasts one day and occurs in the middle of a woman's menstrual cycle, about two weeks before she expects to get her period. The release of an egg was considered a sudden, explosive event, but these pictures show it taking place over a time of at least 15 minutes. Follicles are usually sized 12–19 mm, intact healthy oocytes with corona cells obtained from small (3-4 mm diameter), medium (5-8 mm diameter) and large (9-15 mm diameter). Human life begins at fertilization (the egg is not the beginning of life - this cell contains only half the necessary genetic information): human development begins after the union of male and female gametes or germ cells during a process known as fertilization (conception). This is the scientific definition of human development.
