Here's a part of a question I got today: "Even though I can understand some of what is being said, I cant come up with words by myself.... I’m so frustrated and almost given up". I love answering your questions on Tumblr, and this one is quite often asked.
Here are my tips:
1. IT TAKES A LONG TIME
First of all, please remember that language learning takes years! It’s a lifelong journey. There’s always an inital gap between knowing words and having them in your arsenal to use upfront without needing to think too much about them. And that’s OK! You’ll get there. Getting all the words in your long term memory takes time.
2. STUDY RELEVANT VOCABULARY FIRST
What you can do is to keep studying words but be sure to make sentences with them that are useful to your daily life. Using abstract example sentences that you can’t relate to or won’t use isn’t helpful, so study and speak about content you find interesting. Your content must be relevant to your interests. It helps to have a partner or a diary you can talk/write to about your daily life, hobbies and interests so you’re constantly using and being reminded of relevant words.
3. YOUR MINDSET MATTERS
Because you’re telling yourself that you are “frustrated and almost giving up”, you already have a negative mindset surrounding your specific target language. You can have all the perfect study methods but if your mindset is not in the right place, you won’t make progress. Here’s a popular video I made about the right mindset to have when learning a language.
4. FIND SOMEONE TO HELP
You might find also benefit in getting an italki tutor. I felt the same way about Chinese for years and only after I forced myself out of my comfort zone to speak with a tutor who I knew was there to help and not judge me, did my Chinese speaking improve. I took lessons for about 2 months and now I’m more confident to talk with friends who can help me (for free lol)

How To Overcome Your Fears For Good...
Maybe you’re good with people one-on-one. But the moment you have to present in front of multiple people, you get tongue tied, nervous, and you can’t speak.
Or maybe you’re usually really good at what you do. But as soon as there’s a lot of pressure to deliver - or there’s a tight deadline - you crumble under the pressure.
How do you push through those moments and overcome those fears once and for all?
Let me show you...
So, I want you to grab a pen and paper and draw yourself a circle. (Even if you’ve done this exercise before)
And inside that circle, write down everything you already have.
(Some ideas: friends, family, spouse, car, home... be very specific.)
Are you done? Okay.
Now outside that circle, I want you to list some of the things you’ve always dreamt about having/doing.
Your wildest dreams and goals.
So you should now have a circle with a few things you already have inside the circle - and then everything else you don’t have (but really want) outside your circle.
Done?
Okay.
So, think of this circle as your comfort zone.
Everything inside it is what you’re comfortable with. And what you already have. But if you look at your goals and dreams...
Are they inside the circle? Or are they outside the circle?
They’re outside.
And that’s what holds most people back.
You see, as humans we are creatures of habit.
We eat the same food. We go to the same places. And we spend our time with the same people...
We don’t naturally like change. And when things do change, we’ll do anything we can to get things back to the way they were.
And that’s what holds most people back.
So the next time you’re facing one of these situations where you’re in fear, and you don’t think you can do it, I want you to remember...
That on the other side of fear, pain, and discomfort — there is confidence, joy, and happiness.
And on the other side of failure, confusion, and overwhelm — there’s success, clarity, and freedom.
Now, if you’re ready to conquer fear and elevate your financial well-being…
