Special thanks to AIT Director Christensen for selecting the final “Book of the Month”!
"I first read Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire the 1970s when I was in high school in Utah. At the time, a controversial development project was being considered on the Kaiparowits Plateau in the middle of Southern Utah’s red rock country. Reading Abbey’s compelling account of his experiences as a ranger in Utah’s Arches National Park, gave me a new appreciation of the need to preserve the unspoiled wilderness of Southern Utah and elsewhere in America. As Abbey put it, “We need wilderness whether or not we ever set foot in it. We need a refuge even though we may never need to go there. Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread.” Fortunately, the environmentalists who opposed the project prevailed and those natural lands have been preserved for future generations to enjoy.
The Shark Club is a fun, lighthearted read about a marine biologist in love with sharks. She meets the daughter of her ex-boyfriend and reluctantly starts forming a bond with this little girl who’s as passionate as she is about sea creatures. This books reminds us all to stop and marvel at the creation around us, especially those of us living near the ocean. #AIT@40 #EnvironmentMonth

Hi! I’m Crystal, AIT@40 Campaign Coordinator. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication (Broadcasting) from The University of Texas at Arlington and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership at National University – San Diego. Education is a value that was instilled in me at a very young age, which is why I am excited to announce that AIT is celebrating Education Month throughout September. Here is my recommendation for ‘Book of the Month’:
Named to Former President Barack Obama’s summer reading list, best-selling author Tara Westover’s memoir “Educated,” is about growing up in Idaho with her Mormon survivalist family that kept her out of the public school system until the age of seventeen. Although Westover faced many hurdles in life, she persisted. Going above and beyond the norm with all odds against her, Tara eventually earned a PhD from Cambridge University. Tara’s story is a victory of education; reminding us all that knowledge is power.
Did you know that 2 percent of Americans have a doctoral degree, and 1.5 percent have earned a professional degree that requires study beyond a four-year bachelor's degree? Where did you receive or plan to earn your degree? Post in the comments below.
