Identite has become a part of my identity, as it has with most other musicians I know. Many of Singapore's most well-loved bands started out and spent their nights here... important, unforgettable nights filled with original, local music of outstanding quality and boundless raw emotion. Playing at Identite is like a rite of passage; a symbolic welcome into the local scene.
Over the years, it’s become so much more than a gig series; it's a big community of really, really close friends who are diverse and open-minded in that they come from a myriad different musical backgrounds and genres, but like-minded in their love for music and the local arts/music scene. It is probably the dearest, most precious community to independent musicians and local music lovers in Singapore.
Identite is both a liberating and protective environment: people here are so full of fire and so "real" that it simultaneously liberates and protects you from the often judgemental, superficial and artificial side of the arts scene. People at Identite are not there to be seen, they are there to listen, and to show love. That in itself is so rare, and that's what makes it so special. It's the one place that allows you to wholly connect with your listeners—people yell hilarious things from the audience, fans become friends, mistakes are forgiven, and you can injure a frail audience member while attempting to crowdsurf before collapsing headfirst and spending the rest of the night with an ice-pack to your skull… without having to feel paiseh. (not mentioning any names… definitely not Isa Ong)
Identite doesn't discriminate: you can find absolute newbies, veterans, hardcore bands, acoustic pop acts, all on the same bill. The magic starts when they begin to listen to and appreciate each others' music, begin gear-gawking together and exchanging advice, begin collaborating and marrying styles, begin forming new bands, inspiring new bands to form, pushing Singapore music forward... all while forging lifelong friendships along the way. All sorts of amazing artists jump in freely, doing live visuals, designing album art, gig posters, band shirts, conceptualising and curating new shows, producing local DIY mixtapes for friends to distribute overseas when on tour… etc. Everybody feeds and feeds on everybody else’s creative qi and so many definitive local works have been a product of this process.
There are so many collectives and groups of passionate individuals--musicians, artists, designers, visual artists alike--who have been conducting their projects under the umbrella of RSC and with support from Identite. We depend very heavily on the support, resources, expertise, and most importantly, the physical space that Home Club provides. Many of our projects seek to explore art in a variety of different ways, not just within music but across all disciplines and involving artists of diverse backgrounds. These are projects we strongly believe have a place in furthering and expanding Singapore's relationship with art. We need this physical space to materialise our dreams and ideas. Without Identite, we feel like we have no Home.
It is never going to be the same, but Identite will remain as alive as ever, even as it looks for a new home. In the meantime, let’s make our final Identite at Home Club a night to remember.
