In partnership with Guerlain and UNESCO, the French Observatory of Apidology (OFA) welcomed this year's group of trainees to the hills of Sainte-Baume, Southern France, on June 21 2021. As new entrepreneurs, this year's debut graduating class will become members of a worldwide community of women beekeepers, who along with their stocks of bees will strengthen local biodiversity and pass on their own knowledge, helping to make the world a more beautiful place.
Boasting an exciting new skill set and sustainable drive, each member of this groundbreaking group of female beekeepers will leave with 50 hives to begin their own beekeeping operation in their chosen region. The bee repopulation process will respect species endemic to each region concerned. To preserve local biodiversity, no species will be imported.

Guerlain is committed to giving back to Nature as part of our #InTheNameOfBeauty commitment. For over ten years, Guerlain has worked to protect the preserved ecosystem of Ouessant Island, off the coast of Brittany. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the island is home to a singular native species, the black bee, whose incredibly pure honey is the basis of the BlackBee Repair Technology* used in the Abeille Royale collection.
To protect this unique species of bee, found only on Ouessant Island, Guerlain has been a proud patron of the Brittany Black Bee Conservatory Association since 2011. In 2014, we signed our Sustainable Development Sponsorship Pact, which will accompany the Conservatory in two main areas for ten years: financial support to ensure the maintenance of the hives and other associated initiatives, and support for its research and communication activities.
As a member of the UEBT association, Union For Ethical Biotrade, the Maison Guerlain strengthens its commitment towards ethical, sustainable sourcing. Founded in 2007, this non-governmental organisation is recognised the world over for its standard of practices regarding ethical sourcing of ingredients produced through biodiversity. As a member of the UEBT, Guerlain is committed to sourcing that respects Humankind and biodiversity. Through this approach of ongoing improvement, the House aims to have its forty most significant sourcing channels certified with the UEBT standard by 2026.

"The Women for Bees partnership is extremely vital. This is the first time that we will recognize the role of women beekeepers across the world." - Shamila Nair Bedouelle, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences at @UNESCO
During the program, each Women for Bees participant will obtain the tools to becoming a professional beekeeper-entrepreneur, as well as a member of an international network of female beekeepers. Each graduating class of beekeepers will help contribute to bee repopulation with UNESCO: by 2025, 2500 hives will have been built within 25 UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and 125 million bees will have been restocked.
