Since I was in the western part of Singapore for the Tuas Port groundbreaking, I paid a visit to Sultan Shoal – a speck of an island smaller than a football pitch.
Located 5.5km from the mainland, between Jurong Island and the upcoming Tuas Port, it is home to a 124-year-old lighthouse, a man-made lagoon, and the old PSA holiday chalets.
The light in the Sultan Shoal Lighthouse originally comprised a cluster of three single wick oil lamps. Now, it has an LED beacon that uses solar power. Automated, and managed by a lean team from MPA, the beacon guides ships and mariners safely into our harbour and beyond. – LHL
