「Why not」を使いこなそう
=================================
　
今日はネイティブがよく口にするフレーズ「Why not」について。アメリカ人とよく接触する機会のある方は、色々なシチュエーションでよく耳にするフレーズかと思います。今回は誰でも簡単に覚えられる3つの代表的な使い方をご紹介します。

1) 理由を聞き返す返事として
→「Why not?（なぜ〜しないの？）」
--------------------------------------------------
　
相手の発言に対して「何で〜しないの？」「何で〜がだめなの？」のように、理由を聞き返す時に使われます。例えば、友達が「コンサートへ行かない」って言った時に「Why not?（何で行かないの？）」という具合で使われます。
　
✔「Why _____?（何で◯◯をするの？）」の質問に対して「Why not?」と答えると「何で◯◯をしてはいけないの？」と、逆にやらない（やってはいけない）理由を聞き返すニュアンスになります。
　
＜例文＞
　
～会話例１～

A: I don't want to go running today.
（今夜はランニングしたくないです。）

B: Why not? It's such a beautiful day.
（何で[走りたくないの]？素晴らしい一日なのに。）
　
～会話例２～

A: You shouldn't travel alone.
（一人旅しないほうがいいです。）

B: Why not? I heard it's fun.
（何で[してはいけないの]？楽しいって聞きましたよ。）
　
～会話例３～

A: Why are you buying such an expensive bag?
（何でそんな高価なカバン買うねん？）

B: Why not?

2) 人からの提案や誘いに賛同・同意・賛成する
→「(Sure,) why not?（是非・もちろん）」

誘いや提案、依頼や申し出などに対し、「もちろん」「是非」「いいよ」のように前向きでポジティブな返事（相づち）として使われます。例えば、友達に「Do you want to go Karaoke tonight?（今夜カラオケに行きませんか？」と誘われた場合「Sure, why not?（いいね、行こうよっ！）」のような感じで使われます。ここで使われる「Why not?」を直訳すると「◯◯をしない理由ない」となることから、「カラオケに行かない理由が見当たらない」といった意味として捉えられます。
　
✔一般的に「Sure, Why not?」の組み合わせがよく使われます。
　
✔相手の意見や考えに対して「そうだね」と同意する場合でも使われます。
　
＜例文＞
　
～会話例１～

A: Let's go hiking!
（ハイキングへ行きましょう。）

B: Sure, why not? Where do you want to hike?
（是非とも！どこへ行きますか？）
　
～会話例２～

A: Would you like another beer?
（ビールもう一杯いかがですか？）

B: Sure, why not?
（もちろんです。）
　
～会話例３～

A: I really think our company should allow us to wear casual clothes.
（カジュアルな服装での出勤を許すべきだと思います。）

B: Yeah, why not? We don't deal with customers.
（そうですね。接客しているわけでもないですしね。）

3) 自分の意見や考えを提案する
→「Why not _____?（〜したらどうですか？）」

「Why not」は、人に提案やアドバイスをする際に「Why don't you _____?」の代わりの言い方としての役割も成します。例えば、スカイプの英会話レッスンをやろうか迷っている友達に「とりあえず、やってみたら？」と提案をするときは「Why not give it a try?」となります。
　
✔「Why not」の後には「動詞」がフォロー。
　
＜例文＞
　
～会話例１～

A: My car broke down and I have to take the bus to work today.
（車が故障して今日はバスで仕事にいかないといけない。）

B: Why not take my car? I don't need it today anyway.
（私の車を乗ったら？どうせ今日は使わないし。）
　
～会話例２～

A: Why not study abroad?
（海外留学したらどうですか？）

B: I really want to but I don't have the money right now.
（本当はそうしたいのですが、今はお金がなくて。）

Please RSVP. Lastly, I'm going against my mother's wishes for now and will continue to make as many videos of Vietnamese people abroad as possible because of many reasons. First, this is my passion right now. Meeting and hearing people's stories of struggles and success gives me a lot of pride in being Vietnamese and how resilient we are. Secondly, I have a degree in history and I understand the importance of recording history. If we don't save or document history, it will be lost forever. The younger generations or the current ones unaware should at least know some history. They'll have a better understanding and respect for where they came from. Perhaps then, hearing experiences and stories from others will also motivate and inspire them. It certainly influenced me. And lastly, I hope to continue to fine tune and learn from this short documentary production art. It's a form of expression that I've been doing for years and always want to improve and make better videos. Certain opportunities have arisen from the past, and hopefully more might happen in the future. The only way I'll know is if I keep creating content that I am passionate about
