Are you studying in a Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) school? Last Saturday over 20 GLOBE Program teachers from across Taiwan came together in Zhongli to participate in a workshop co-hosted by AIT and National Central University! Drawing from over 20 years of experience teaching bilingual students in the U.S., former English Language Fellow Bob Powell focused on the essential elements in an English science report, as well as the essential building blocks to lay down a solid foundation for students to ultimately achieve successful academic writing. Additionally he shared a few English presentation skills by referring to Dale Carnegie’s methods. Each year, GLOBE students submit science research reports as part of the International Virtual Science Symposium and participate in GLOBE student research exhibitions. The class helps teachers better prepare their students for these GLOBE science activities. The GLOBE project enables Taiwan teachers and students to connect and share scientific data with GLOBE participants in 124 participating countries. 現在是夏天，每個人都在瀑布裡游泳，我開始看到一連串的留言警告，警告人們不要在瀑布中形成隱藏的，看不見的水流下游泳。這是一個非常常見的留言，用來嚇唬沒有經驗的游泳者或不熟悉瀑布的人，以免他們掉入水中。它常出現在FB和YT的留言中，並在新聞文章中發表，甚至溯溪教練有時也會重複（即使他們知道這是錯誤的）。在每個深瀑布池中，水下的水流比表面的流得慢。

Now that it's summer and everyone is out swimming in waterfalls, I'm starting to see a string of comments warning people against hidden, unseen underwater currents that can form in waterfalls. It's a very common phrase which is used to scare away inexperienced swimmers or people unfamiliar with waterfalls, so that they don't go in the water. It shows up in comments all over FB and YT, it's published in news articles, and even river tracing coaches repeat it sometimes (even though they know it's false). In every single deep waterfall pool, the current is slower under the water than it is on the surface.

This is the physical property of a deep pool, there are no exceptions to it. Fast water on top, slow water on the bottom. This happens because water is entering and exiting at the top of the pool, so the flow is moving across the surface, and also because deeper water has more friction against other water molecules and the pool bottom, which slows down the water (kinetic energy is converted to heat). Telling people that there are hidden currents in deep pools is not only inaccurate, but it's also dangerous.

Giving people false information regarding safety is dangerous. Trying to scare someone into staying out of the water by spreading sensationalist fear-mongering is counter productive. If you have knowledge about how currents work, you should be teaching that knowledge instead of making stuff up.

It's so important to know that aren't invisible underwater currents for two reasons:

1) When the current is too strong, and you can't swim against it, the best action to take is to swim under it. That's right. You can simply dive deeper and swim under the current, avoiding it entirely. In the video below the surface current is too powerful to swim against. It's very easy to swim under. At 1-2 meters depth, the water is practically unmoving. (Watch Nicky swim directly against the current with ease)

2) Telling people that there are invisible currents underwater ignores the fact that there are very visible and predictable currents on the surface. We can understand a lot about the fluid dynamics of a pool just by looking at it. We can easily see the speed and direction of the flow by visual observation. Objects such as sticks or leaves can also be thrown if to make it more clear.

So stop telling people that there is a danger you can't see in the water. It's not true. You can see what happens just by looking at it. And after you see it, it's not an unknown danger anymore. Once it's known to you, you can study it and plan accordingly. The current can be an obstacle to get around, or a tool to help you get where you are going. It's not a hidden boogie man to be feared, but a natural and predictable part of the river. Know your limits and learn how to read the river, and prepare accordingly. Then you will be safe, every single time.

According to statistics from the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families, approximately 4-6% of children will be born into families suffering from poverty. They don’t have enough food and nutrition, lack protection and care, and grow up to fall into the vicious cycle of poverty. “There is no simple solution to poverty.” From the long-term observation of the YongLin Education Foundation, 100 children have 100 different stories. There is no simple solution to their problem. “You have to help every child achieve his or her happiness.” Get close to them, listen to them, and lend them a helping hand.

The 23-year-old Liang-chin Chen once worked four jobs as a child. When in junior high school, his parents failed in their business venture and were frequent by loan sharks who often came to collect debts. They borrowed NT$300,000, but with rolling interests, their debt accumulated into the millions. His family lived in metal shacks, and all their hard-earned cash was given to underground loan sharks. “I earn my own living expenses, and I went to sell mantou (Chinese steamed buns) at moving night markets for NT$5 apiece. When business was good, I would earn NT$400, and the whole family would be able to fill their bellies the next day.” Once when he was in the seventh grade, a gang member came to his house and scolded him: If you don’t have money, why do you bother to study? Why not go out and make some money?!

23歲的陳良進年幼時曾同時打4份。讀國中時，父母因為生意失敗、家道中落，三不五時就有黑道上門討債，借了30萬利息滾出幾百萬債務，全家人住在鐵皮屋裡，辛苦賺的錢都繳給地下錢莊。「我自己的生活費自己賺，到許多流動夜市賣饅頭，賣掉一顆賺5元，生意好時一個晚上賺400元，全家人隔天就能吃飽，」陳良進說，國一時黑道上門，指著他罵：「沒錢讀什麼書，為什麼不出去賺錢？」

In this environment, Liang-chin Chen could not care less about school work, focusing only on working part-time jobs to make ends meet. He lived this way until his high school teacher convinced him that “studying holds the greater value” by showing him how he can receive scholarships through good grades. It’s more cost-effective than selling mantou. Liang-chin Chen climbed from the bottom of a remote high school to the top of his class in a national university. His university even helped him pay back the loan sharks through scholarships. He is currently a postgraduate student at National Cheng Kung University. This year, Liang-chin Chen is teaching elders how to exercise in Tainan’s remote areas. “I don’t have the money to contribute back to society and to help others, so I will use my skills and abilities to help elders in the community.” Liang-chin Chen is also a lecturer for Fubon Charity Foundation’s Youth from Disadvantaged Family Program.

在這種環境下，除了每天打工賺錢溫飽外，學業上自暴自棄，上學只為了中午能吃到營養午餐。直到高中遇到良師跟他說「讀書CP值更高」，還教他計算成績多少可以換取多少獎學金，比賣饅頭划算。讓他從山上放牛班的學生變成國立大學第一名畢業，大學還靠獎學金幫家裡還完地下錢莊的債，現在就讀成大的研究所。陳良進今年到台南偏鄉教老人運動，「自己沒有錢回饋社會、幫助別人，只好用一技之長回饋社區幫助老人家。」最近陳良進也接受中華人之幼協會邀請，擔任講師。

陳良進就是該協會邀請合作留在台南家鄉貢獻的範例。總是面帶笑容，跟長輩講得一口好台語的陳良進，可以理解偏鄉貧困孩子的處境，「我是住在鐵皮屋長大的小孩，學習過程中遇到大大小小的貴人，因此長大後想回饋，也能看到不同的世界，」他說，走入偏鄉會跟貧窮兒說，不用害怕出身環境不好，要比拚的是10年、20年後的成就，他自己就是活生生的示範。
