Hong Kong Watch and the Victim of Communism Memorial Foundation will host a panel of distinguished speakers to commemorate the anniversary of the 2019 pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. Following Beijing’s decision to unilaterally impose a National Security Law on Hong Kong, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has certified to Congress that Hong Kong no longer enjoys a high degree of autonomy from China. The implication of this assessment could see Hong Kong losing its special trading status with the US and its standing as an international financial hub.
The panel of speakers will share their insights into Hong Kong’s resistance against the authoritarian regime, shed light on China’s reliance on Hong Kong as a financial centre and as a backdoor for China's global expansion, and discuss the implication for Hong Kong losing its special trading status with the US and its international financial status.
This will be followed by an open floor discussion considering international solidarity and potential actions in support of the pro-democracy movement.
