Foreigners who live and work here contribute to our economy and society. They are very much a part of our local community.
Yesterday in Parliament, Lawrence Wong moved a motion for Singapore to stay open in a globalised world. He also asked Parliament to support the government’s management of the foreign work pass numbers, and to deplore the spreading of misinformation about FTAs like the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) to stir up racism and xenophobia.
Our policies on foreign workers have created many jobs and opportunities. Still, Singaporeans are anxious and concerned about competition from the foreigners working here. We are addressing these concerns, and the problems caused by having a large foreign population in our midst. But as I said at the National Day Rally recently, we must remain open and welcoming to foreigners. If we turn inwards and become hostile to them, it would ruin us as a global hub and cost us investments and jobs (https://go.gov.sg/ndr2021-el).
The debate stretched past midnight. It was an important debate. At stake were not just our policies on foreigners, but the values of our society, and our confidence and resolve to face an uncertain world, and chart our way forward together.
I am glad MPs took a firm and unequivocal stance against racism and xenophobia, and firmly rejected attempts to use Singaporeans’ fears and anxieties to divide and weaken us. It bodes well for our future. – LHL

Since a very young age, I've faced lots and lots of challenges in the process of getting to where I am today. Originating from a small town, Mentakab, I was finding it immensely difficult to communicate in English given that my mother tongue is Tamil. Throughout schooling days, I mostly mingled with Malays and Indians, hence, I was not faced with a bright opportunity to better my English when it came to speaking. When I came here, communication obviously rose to be one of my major struggles.
Moreover, I grew up with the strong ambition to eventually become a successful model and actress. I had this dream in me ever since I was an innocent 12 years old. I was so passionate to extent that my cupboard door would be filled with posters of Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen and other actresses that never failed to amaze me and kept the dream in me alive.
When I came here to pursue my studies, I hit a bumpy road after following the wrong path, having mingled with the wrong kind of company. Moreover, when it came to my aim of being a successful model, I had no family support whatsoever. Therefore, I used to really struggle with the little pocket money that they'd give me. I used to travel daily from Cyberjaya to KL with whatever money I had at hand just to attend auditions with the hopes of making it in this industry. I used to take buses and trains to attend the loads of beauty peagents, TBC shoots and photoshoots without the knowledge of my parents because they were never willing to give me their approval. I used to quickly shut off the television in fear on multiple occasions when they would show segments of where I joined dance competitions, beauty peagents and telecasts.
My parents never believed I could make living out of this. They strongly believed that only by studying can one succeed. They disliked the plain idea of it. This eventually came to a point where it extinguished the passion I had within me. Hence, after completing my studies, I took up a job that they would approve of. However, once I begin making my own money, I was determined to chase after my dreams. I picked up from where I left off with my peagents, photoshoots and so much more. The financial independence allowed me to chase after what I believed was meant to be mine but unfortunately, I still did not own my family's support when it came to my choice of career. I had no choice but to keep everything a secret.
It reached a point where I had to even hide when I had gained a little success in the field of my dreams. They never realized anything until I became the talk of the town after winning a beauty peagent. After enquiring about why I never disclosed anything to them, I simply answered cause I knew they'd never give me the support I needed. My teenage life was difficult. I had so much passion but close to no support. However, I still pulled through it all.
Soon I became a host to a TV programme and that was when I knew that no other girl should ever be in my position. No other girl should ever feel alone in the journey of achieving her dreams. I wanted to be the source that builds girls who were like me. I wanted to grant them the platform they deserved. I wanted them to be given the path which was right and only filled with the intention of contributing to their future success.
I invested in a lot of time and effort to open up my very own modelling agency which doesn't rip off money from the hands of innocent girl, however, genuinely helps them grow. I only placed a price over the compcard shoots I would hold but when it came to the job opportunities, it was all theirs. Their effort, their strive, hence, their income only. This was my effort to give girls like me a source of hope.
Eventually, after gaining the experience I needed, I let go of my full-time job and opened a company of my own called Black and White Media. Following that, I even pursued my passion of becoming a make-up artist as I have eventually grew a strong liking towards the career.
Fast forward into the future, I have gained the approval of ALL, whether it is my parents or relatives, I have everyone around me. Those who refused to talk to me, are proud of me now. Those who saw my dreams as something wrong and taboo, seem astounded by my achievements. I feel accomplished because I have proven on my side that my determination, strive and passion was not simply wasted. I made it happen for myself and I'm really putting in my side of work to make it happen for the other girls who remind me of myself.
My vision is to keep giving the support and push these innocent girls need to make it big. It has come to a point where their success feels like mine eventhough I make absolute nothing out of it. I also have this fierce need to give back to the society that has brought me up by inspiring them on the daily. Eventhough, I lost my account last year, I realize that I got me and I can make it happen till I have myself. After all, there are just some things no one can steal from you.
So, for all the women out there, be fierce, be strong, be gentle, just be YOU. Learn what you're capable of, you'll end up amazing yourself. Never fear society if you feel that something is meant for you. Prove it to them with what you deem as your success.

【Lesson #5 - Don’t compete just for the sake of competing】
All is fair in love and war, or so they say. Oftentimes founders will move heaven and earth just to find out what their competitors are doing and how they can get a leg up--sometimes to the point where they lose sight of WHY they've started the business in the first place. In my chat with Chris Xue, Co-founder/COO of Novelship (AW#16), he reveals how in his quest to build Asia's leading online marketplace for limited edition sneakers and streetwear, he became blindsided by an over-optimization on squashing competition, while stressing why in hindsight a customer focus will ALWAYS trump a competitor focus.
***
Beating out your competitors is an almost primal instinct. It’s also a topic that investors always ask about—”how are you different from xyz? How will you compete against them? What makes you the winning horse?”
Certainly, a lot of that emphasis had misguided our own efforts in the past. After relaunching our platform two years ago, we had an almost infatuation-like obsession with outflanking our enemy, tracking their every move, poaching key accounts, and outbidding them in ads, at least up until COVID came around.
The logical thing to do was go into hibernation. Who would want to buy hype sneakers in the midst of an economic downturn. Staying open would’ve meant higher burn, decreased runway, and less ammunition to fight against competitors when the economy recovers. All of our peers closed shop; even our investors encouraged us to shut down for a few months.
It was certainly compelling, but then we started thinking about our customers, and the thousands of sellers that depend on our platform to support their livelihood, whether it’s terms of paying bills, covering tuition, or supporting their own families. Upon that revelation, we applied to become an essential business and was eventually given a license to continue operating.
Unsuspectingly, buyers also continued buying, if not more. With no other platform running, Novelship became top of mind for customers. Growth accelerated, placing us miles ahead of our competitors.
Don’t get me wrong—competitors are important. It helps keep you sharp and innovative, and also proves that there’s demand for your product/service. But don’t compete just for the sake of competing. It blinds you, and keeps you from truly listening to and understanding what your customers want.
It’s ok to be aware of what your competitors are doing, but don’t let that be the sole driver in your decision making. It’s more important to understand how the competitors’ moves ultimately add value to the users, then you can sensibly determine whether or not to go down that path.

The M.E. Series (The Millennial Experience). Created all on Mobile with #iPhone12ProMax
Weekend. Raining. Work had been hectic. Needed to take some time off to recharge. Covid. WFH. Blurred lines between work and personal time. No time to shut off from work completely. Found myself working from screens to screen. Laptop to phone. Even leisure is watching videos online.
In need of time for a digital detox.
Found a bookstore that was opened in Feb this year, in the heart of Orchard Road, Wheelock Place. Where the Borders flagship used to be. If you know what I’m talking about, you’re from my time. I recall the times when I was still in secondary school, hanging at Borders with my friends who love reading, and I will be there checking out the CDs.
Heard that it has a 2 storey space with a cafe and gallery as well. Heard that the ones in China open 24hours, although it’s not happening in SG yet
——
Zall Bookstore, an outlet with more than 30,000 books mostly in Chinese, also has a cafe and art gallery
——
“Ms Laura Yan Ge, 24, who is general manager of the Singapore store, said at a media preview on Friday that while the company did not anticipate the coronavirus outbreak erupting amid its expansion, it believes bookstores are especially vital during a pandemic.
‘Because of Covid-19, there is a lot of distance between people nowadays," she said in Mandarin. "We believe books will help to close this gap. They provide food for thought and people can use them to widen their worlds.’”

As a creator myself, I need to constantly find inspiration.
While I can readily find all sorts of information online, sometimes I found my mind being constantly overloaded instead. We read. Socialise. We basically live most parts of our lives in the virtual world, and now we have lesser and lesser reasons to get out there anymore.
So, why a new book store? When was the last time you visited a book store?
Being here made me realised that it’s not about the books. It’s about the space. It’s about the experience. It’s about being here and being present. And what happens when you unplug from the internet and be present in the moment? You’ll get involuntarily intrigued by the surroundings, the people, the architecture, the noise, the beauty of it all. You’ll find headspace. You’ll find your inspiration. You’ll even find a new you.
When was the last time you stepped outside, set aside time just for yourself, and experience life beyond the screen?

Allen Iverson would almost always rather drive to the basket than settle for a jumper.
Seattle's porous defense gave him ample opportunity to dart down the lane for all the easy baskets he wanted.
Iverson scored 41 points, John Salmons had 18 and Kyle Korver 17 to lead the Philadelphia 76ers over the SuperSonics 107-98 on Monday night.
Although Iverson said he's still slightly bothered by his right ankle, which he sprained Dec. 27 at Denver, it hardly showed as he had one of his top shooting nights of the season.
"It's getting a lot better with treatment and everything, and I'm able to push off it like I want to," Iverson said. "Once it gets loose, I'm able to move around like I want to. I try to get to the basket."
Certainly returning home provided an immediate fix for the slumping Sixers. When they left for a 15-day, seven-game trip, they were in first place in the Atlantic Division; they returned four games back in the division race after a 2-5 mark.
"If we closed games out better, we'd have a lot more wins," Iverson said. "I honesty feel like we gave away eight games this season, games we should have won."
The Sonics have been just as bad, finishing 1-4 on a trip that saw them fire Bob Weiss and replace the coach with Bob Hill.
Hill promised a quicker pace and improvement on defense as ways to turn around Seattle's disappointing season.
Seattle's league-worst defense still needs work.
Iverson scored 40-plus points for the eighth time this season as he chases Kobe Bryant for the league scoring title. Iverson wasn't the only one getting open looks -- the Sixers shot 53 percent from the field, seven points higher than their average.
Chris Webber sat out with a lower back strain and was listed as day-to-day. Coach Maurice Cheeks was hopeful that rest would allow Webber to return for Wednesday's game against Utah.
Salmons started in Webber's place and hardly missed a beat on 7-for-9 shooting. Andre Iguodala had 16 points and Samuel Dalembert 11 to put all five starters in double digits.
"That's how you should play," Iverson said. "When you do share the ball, nine times out of 10, more positive results come of it."
Ray Allen led the Sonics with 27 points and Vladimir Radmanovic had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The Sonics rallied from a 19-point deficit to pull within six late in the fourth quarter -- hardly surprising since only Seattle allows more points than the Sixers -- after 3-pointers by Allen and a couple of free throws from Rashard Lewis.
Korver, though, sank his fifth 3-pointer and Salmons added a 3 to get the lead back to nine. Stuck on 39 points for a while, Iverson sank two free throws to push him over 40 and give the Sixers a 106-95 lead.
"We took control of the game and shut them down," Dalembert said. "We controlled the tempo of the game and didn't really let them get back in."
Iverson scored nine points during a 19-5 run in the third quarter that gave the Sixers a 79-60 lead. Iverson usually drove through a lane that offered little resistance and little reason for the All-Star to resort to his usual banging and crashing all over the court.
Iverson went 6-for-8 in third for 18 points and the Sixers shot 68 percent in the quarter. Hill blamed fatigue from a long road trip for the Sonics going flat in the third.
"We played pretty well in the first half, then I'm sure our legs got tired," Hill said. "We wouldn't move and we weren't guarding. Away games are tough, but they have to find a way to fight fatigue. That was a winnable game."
With the easy looks, and a mid-range jumper that was on target, Iverson finished 15-for-25 from the floor and made 11 of 13 free throws.
Game notes
Korver hit a 3-pointer for the 26th straight game, the longest streak in the league. ... Sonics F Danny Fortson sat out with a sore left knee and C Vitaly Potapenko sat out with a lower back strain. ... Iverson was briefly shaken up when he was smacked in the face by Luke Ridnour while they went after a loose ball in the third quarter. ... Iverson has 67 career games with more than 40 points. ... The Sixers are 8-0 at home against the Western Conference.
