When I was in school, at different points, I remember there’d be rumours about teachers who we thought were gay. “That ___, gay, right? Gay, right?? Aiyah, just say la dunno he/she scared for what!”

Actually, a person’s sexuality is really none of our business. Whatever their reason for saying or not, also none of our business. Also evident is that... judgement? That they were somehow not being honest because they weren’t “admitting” that they were gay. But none of us are entitled to anybody’s truth. And what we never would have known, or understood even if we did know, is exactly how much they had to be scared about. How much the LGBTQIA community has to be scared about, just being who they are. In the families they grow up in, the friends they hang out with, the schools they go to, the houses they live in, the companies they work in, the country they live in. Let’s create a world where everyone can feel safe, where everyone doesn’t have any reason to be afraid to be who they are.
