#Congratulations! Director Hsin-Chien Huang's latest VR works, Samsara and The Starry Sand Beach, were nominated for the 78th Venice International Film Festival!
The 78th Venice International Film Festival (VIFF) announced the shortlisted nominees for the category of VR Film. Taiwanese new media artist, Distinguished Professor of NTNU, Hsin-Chien Huang, winner of the BEST VR Experience in 2017 with his work La Camera Insabbiata, will again contest for the Leone d’oro this year with two of his latest, sci-fi inspired works, Samsara and The Starry Sand Beach. While the Taiwanese athletes are striving for the Gold Medals at the Tokyo Olympics as we speak, director Hsin-Chien Huang dazzles the jury of VIFF with his visually-stunning and thought-provoking works — bringing cutting-edge Taiwanese VR films onto the international stage and letting world-wide audience sees Taiwan!
Before being selected for the 78th Venice International Film Festival, Samsara episode 1. has already grabbed the Jury Award at SXSW and Best VR Story at the Cannes XR Competition. This futuristic VR experience teleports the audience onto a journey that spans millions of years. Samsara is a Sanskrit word meaning “ the world ”. In Buddhism, it means what we perceive as the world is actually an endless cycle of karma (cause and effect), a cycle of life, death and rebirth in the six realms of existence. In this fascinating VR work, the audience is reincarnated into the bodies of different persons and creatures, experiencing the universe in their new bodies and in search for the ultimate spiritual transcendence.
Samsara depicts an apocalyptical story in the near future where human greed has depleted the earth’s resource. Catastrophic wars to fight for resource resulted in global destruction. Finally, the remaining humans had to leave the Earth and go on a search in space for a new place to live.
Nevertheless, their desperate, long quest for a new homeland… could it be just a loop in space and time? The cycle of greedy domination and total destruction that then necessitates the search for a new home…. may have hopelessly repeated itself over and over again? The constant evolutionary process and so-called progress, without transformation in consciousness and spiritual advancement, is nothing more than a Möbius strip that leads nowhere, perhaps…?
Samsara is an experiment based on the theory of Embodied Cognition. Through interactivity and VR, the audience gets to live inside the bodies of different persons and creatures, experiencing their feelings from within. Perhaps It is when we can perceive the world in different bodies that we may truly appreciate the thoughts of others and empathize with them. An experience that will also help us better comprehend our own existence and learn to live in harmony with all.
Samsara explores a complex of deeply interconnected issues of ecology, technology, natural resource and war, etc. It's a story about a journey humans are forced to take on, after having destroyed the earth with nuclear disasters. The survivors seek a new planet, in the boundless, interstellar space, to carry on their lives. Gradually they evolve into a new life form artificially. Yet, many years passed and they’ve come to realize that they would never make it to the new planet they’ve been dreaming of. In fact, they have simply been returning to the Earth, in different life forms, time after time.
Director Huang applies the concepts of embodied cognition, offering a unique way to contemplate about the nature of life. As the audience are transported into different bodies each time, they gain a brand new perspective to experience the world views presented in Samsara.
Samsara was produced under the guidance of Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) and Kaohsiung Film Archive VR(VR FILM LAB), it’s a sate-of-the-art VR production made 100% in Taiwan. In the VR experience, viewers are transformed into various kinds of animals to interact with the scenes, including species unique and indigenous to Taiwan, such as Taiwan Blue Magpie and Formosan Black Bear.
Samsara Ep.1 features the latest somatosensory technology, including 4D views shooting techniques by the Industrial Technology Research Institute and TAICCA. A digital shooting system comprised of a high-sensitivity 4 million-pixel, full-color CCD sensor and 48 4DV-EX-Z cameras made it possible for Samsara Ep.1 to be taken from an omnidirectional view and shot without any blind spots, creating the ultimate immersive experience.
THE STARRY SAND BEACH, directed by Hsin-Chien Huang and produced in cooperation with Lucid Reality (France) and Oready 瑞意創科 Oready Innovation Lab (Taiwan), is a scientific fairy tale about a unique ecological wonder in Taiwan and Japan, the shiny starry sand beaches. Foraminifera, from the Latin word “foramen” meaning hole, is a single-celled organism that builds a shell with multiple chambers which intercommunicate with one another through holes. On the Qimei Island, Taiwan and the Yaeyama Islands, Japan, beaches have been formed by a specific species of foraminifera with star-shaped shells made of calcium carbonate. Like the real stars in the legends, grains of the starry sand have also been preserving the earth’s memories for millions of years.
THE STARRY SAND BEACH is a real-time 3D interactive VR adventure into the natural and mythological landscape of the starry sand beaches on Qimei Island in Penghu Archipelago, Xing Sha Wan in Kenting National Park and Taketomi Island in the far south of Japan. The experience is full of aesthetically-amazing elements and enriched with cultural and religious significance like Shintoism in Japan. A beautiful, haunting legend tells the story of the starry sand…
The final winners will be presented at the award ceremony held on Sep11. With great anticipation and hopes, Hsin-Chien Huang is expected to bring home again the grand prize for Taiwan!

An Underground show is special because you get new bands, veteran bands, English bands, French bands, marching bands (we did have one) and of course good old fashioned Cantopop bands. But that’s not what Nowhere Boys is. They’re Cantopop, they use ‘old’ music (we’ll get to that), but they’re not old fashioned.
What first struck me was the violin. Standing in the corner was keyboardist Fisher Kan who decided to whip out a violin for their first song 天外飛仙 (Little Fairy). In their musical video, the band members dress up in classical Chinese outfits and do Kung-fu outside Yau Ma Tei Tin Hau temple, and rock-out next to the Star Ferry pier. They didn’t show up in costume but the whimsical, yet hardcore vibe was just as present. The violin was a little quiet, it could have been the mics, or it could have been their placement, but it would have been great to hear it more.
The second song 狂想曲 (Rhapsody) gave more surprises yet. Released in 2015 near the beginning of their career, the song is an eclectic mix of hard rock, Baroque piano, choir music, rap and more. Nowhere Boys is a band which excels in both recorded and live forms; they understand the difference between the two media and artistically transform themselves depending on what their stage is. In the Rhapsody music video, the band members don different outfits showing the many sides of the band, someone’s the Joker, someone’s a cop, they’re in an old timey Hong Kong style barbershop – then everyone changes roles. The chorale section has very strong Queen vibes and seems to reference Bohemian Rhapsody. For such a chaotic video, the performance is actually incredibly tight but not overwhelming. On stage, however, they change completely. The whole performance is a musical whirlwind. The hard rock starts, pinning you to your seat. Then the baroque piano solo comes in – in the video, it’s underscored by black and white visuals – here the whole band stops and points synchronized at the pianist to great applause. The performance is intense; they’re jumping around the stage yelling into mics but then comes the chorale. Everyone stops and sings in perfect acapella harmony despite having just run a marathon.
There’s something to be said for a Cantopop band incorporating so much classic rock, pop and classical music into their performances. Hong Kong is a city where almost everyone has a Grade 8 in musical performance, but becoming a musician is not a career most people will consider. It’s unrealistic, useless, for a hobby only. Our professional choirs and opera groups are performed in by amazing award-winning singers who are actually bankers and doctors. This means that just in terms of classical music knowledge, Hong Kong really is world class – much of local slang actually comes from musical terminology – but it’s ignored. Nowhere Boys whether they know it or not, is bridging that gap. As a rock Cantopop group, they excel perfectly with creative lyrics, great stage presence and top-notch performance, but more than that, they encompass the musical soul of Hong Kong, telling those that play classical music that the pop world does have a space for them and simultaneously letting popular music fans know that the classical side also has a place. Their creativity and performance style weren’t just for a good show, it was inspirational. At least it was to me – a classically trained musician writing rock show reviews.

"妈妈,谢谢你煮给我们吃! Mama, thank you for cooking for us." I guess hearing that makes everything worthwhile.
I must admit, I don't like to cook, I am not a good chef, I don't like to search for new recipes because the list of ingredients usually intimidates me, I don't like the washing and cleaning part that comes after every meal, I take shortcuts whenever I can, and I am happy to keep things as simple as can be.
That said, from someone who can only cook instant noodles before becoming a mum, I can at least now comfortably whip up 三菜一汤 for the kids and have been doing so for over a decade. It doesn't matter to them that I am always repeating the same old dishes, that our homecooked meals are nowhere near restaurant or even kopitiam standard, that my presentation can be way ugly and not fanciful at all.
What they do see is a mum who tries her best day after day to serve food on the table, who makes sure they are well-fed and eat balanced meals, who adds in the one ingredient that they cannot find elsewhere - love ❤.
I usually only share our homecooked meals in my stories because they look so unflattering and straightforward, haha, but I recently realised many of you are just like me too, trying our best to cook for our kids even if we can't do it well. So starting this year, I will compile them under my IG highlights 'Cooking' so you can be reminded that you are not alone and we can share our experiences anytime.
I remember how my mum's cooking was simple too but I loved it nonetheless. It made up a fond part of my childhood and I am grateful for the time and effort she took to whip up those meals. Now, I know my kids feel thankful for everything and appreciate what I do too. These are not just meals, but also precious memories, that we are creating for our kids.
P.S. It is okay to eat out or order takeaways on some days too, take a well-deserved break and don't guilt-trip yourself over it. 😄

望子成龍,望女成鳳,這種心態我很明白。
無奈當父母急著孩子能考到好成績時,往往會忽略孩子的人品發展。
在風水上,哪一顆星能為忙碌的家長們蘊育出更優秀的孩子呢?
...............................
I can perfectly understand parents' mindset of wanting their offspring to be the best that they can be. I have been a foster aunt for three years and have spoken to probably more parents in my line of work, than you did.
Unfortunately, in the race for distinctions, parents often do not have enough time to develop a child's moral character. We sort of hope they will grow up fine, somehow. By emulating us, the parents, perhaps.
In my opinion, that is real risky. It's like tikam tikam. I know, because I come from a family where not every one of us grew up "just fine".
In Feng Shui, which Star can time-stretched parents engage to have an easier time, bringing up children of a better caliber?
Oh, so you are not a parent and you wonder if what I am going to say in this video is going to be useful to you?
Here's a sneak of this Star's powers:
I had benefited immensely from this Star's energies, after I activated it at home.
1. When I was down and out, this Star brought me hope by sending benefactors my way. My benefactors came in all shapes, sizes and colours, and through unexpected sources.
2. When I wanted to start my Metaphysics practice and my only option was to start writing on Facebook, this Star gave me inspiration that runs as voracious as the Yellow River. I have so much content swimming in my head, but not enough time to write everything down.
If you think I write very well, for someone who had not written so much English in almost five years, I got to thank my lucky Star. My writing five years ago was nowhere near this standard.
3. Those with the aid of this Star has a more successful career. I can very well vouch for that.

- Allen Iverson was unstoppable, beating up the Charlotte Hornets on the court and then blasting his own organization afterward.
Iverson scored a career playoff-high 40 points Saturday night, getting 15 of them in a seven-minute burst after Eddie Jones picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter, and the Philadelphia 76ers beat Charlotte 92-82 in Game 1 of their playoff series.
After the game, Iverson ripped general manager Billy King for his comments to a Charlotte newspaper that there has to be some "soul-searching" from both Iverson and team management in order for the team to be successful.
"I really don't think I'm the leader on this team, I don't think I'm a franchise player at all," Iverson said. "I've heard stories about other franchise players and how they're treated, and I don't get treated nowhere near a franchise player. I'm treated like the 12th player on the bench, believe it or not.
"To hear my general manager say I'm not sure the marriage is going to work, it's time to start feeling that way. It's tough to hear that from your general manager."
Iverson even mentioned the possibility of "something happening" over the summer, and hinted that his one-game suspension for missing a shootaround in Miami might have cost his team the homecourt advantage."
He said he was making his comments at such a strange time "because I'm upset. I mean it from the bottom of my heart."
King refused to get off the team bus to discuss Iverson's comments.
Iverson's tirade took some of the luster off a stellar night that started to go his way after Jones picked up his fourth foul.
Iverson did most of his damage when the Hornets were forced to use David Wesley to defend him, scoring 18 in the third quarter and leading a 23-12 run that changed the course of the game.
Iverson went quiet early in the fourth as it took the 76ers more than seven minutes to score their first basket, but he made up for it at the end by scoring six consecutive points after Charlotte pulled within three.
Iverson surpassed his previous playoff-high of 37 reached last year against Orlando. It was the ninth time this season that Iverson scored 40 or more points.
"You think you mean something to this team," Iverson said. "I've played this year with a torn rotator cuff, broken toe, broken thumb, inflammation in my elbow and other injuries I haven't even said anything about, and I don't think it's appreciated by nobody but my team.
"I was shocked to hear (King's comment). I mean, I've been late to practice and I've missed some practices, but the guy who puts on No. 3 for the 76ers should never have to go through what I go through for this organization. I feel like I'm the heart of the team, but I don't feel like a franchise player.
"I've said from Day One I want to be a Sixer till I'm finished playing basketball. But to hear the marriage might not work from somebody who matters who can make it work, it's time to start looking at stuff like that," Iverson said.
Eric Snow, George Lynch and Tyrone Hill added 10 points apiece for the Sixers, who got little help from their reserves as Toni Kukoc shot 0-for-5 and scored just two points.
But the lack of bench production mattered little because of the way Iverson turned the game around.
The first four fouls of the third quarter went against Philadelphia, and it looked a bit like a makeup call when Jones was called for an offensive foul with 7:54 left as he barely pushed off on Snow with his forearm.
"It was a flop. He told me he flopped," Jones said.
Said Snow: "It could have been a no-call."
The Hornets led 51-50 at the time, but it forced Jones to the bench for the rest of the quarter and Charlotte wasn't the same without him.
With Jones shaking his head in disgust at his team's defensive failings, Iverson hit two 3-pointers, two shorter jumpers, two layups and four foul shots the rest of the quarter to give the 76ers a 75-66 lead entering the fourth.
