The Sound of Music always had a special meaning for me - I used to watch it on repeat on the VHS tapes when I was much younger, and when I say “on repeat”, I mean almost every single day for weeks at a time.
So when I found out Salzburg was just a couple of hours away from Munich, it was a no-brainer!
The first was the entrance to Mirabell Gardens, which is the location where they filmed that famous “Do-Re-Mi” song. They also pranced round that fountain with the cheesy horse statue in the middle. I mean, look at the grin on that horse - it was definitely up to no good! 😂
The Von Trapp children also skipped through the maze at the Mirabell Gardens in the movie, and patted the head of one of the many statues of dwarves within the maze - specifically the one with the eyeglasses!
And of course, I had to do the mandatory “pose” that Julie Andrews did at the gates - everyone was doing it too! Those steps were also significant, used during the filming of that same song.
I also visited the Nunnery (Stiftskirche Nonnberg) that Maria was from - it was up a long flight of stairs, but the views of the city and that red dome were definitely worth the climb.
