In the 2000-01 season, Allen Iverson won the lone MVP of his storied career.
When it was all said and done for Allen Iverson's NBA career, he amassed quite the list of accomplishments. From scoring (24,368 points, 25th all-time) to his place in Philadelphia 76ers lore (where he is among the all-time leader in several categories) to playoff runs (guiding the Sixers to a 2001 Finals berth) and more, Iverson left a legacy in crafting his Hall of Fame career.
As he traveled his NBA path, though, perhaps no season was more emblematic of Iverson's ways than the 2000-01 campaign. On May 15, 2001, Allen Iverson became the first 76ers player to win MVP honors since Moses Malone in 1983. Iverson totaled 1,121 points and received 93 of a possible 124 first-place votes. Tim Duncan of the Spurs (706 points, 18 first-place votes) and Shaquille O’Neal of the Lakers (578 votes, five first-place votes) trailed him in the final voting.
Listed at 6 feet and 165 pounds, Iverson is one of the smallest players to ever win MVP honors. During that 2000-01 season, Iverson led the NBA in scoring (31.1 ppg) while helping Philadelphia to an Eastern Conference-best 56 victories, the most for the franchise since 1985, and their first Atlantic Division title since 1990.
He lead the NBA in steals (2.51 a game) and minutes played (42.0 a game), becoming the first player since Michael Jordan in 1992-93 to lead the league in points and steals per game.
“I had no space for error. But I never stopped and worked on all the things people said I couldn't do and now I'm the MVP of the league. It's something I always wanted," Iverson said after receiving the award.

Allen Iverson was one of 10 people elected for enshrinement into the Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday, and while the undersized scoring machine will always be remembered for his time with the Philadelphia 76ers, his legendary step-over on Tyronn Lue and his epic "practice" rant, there's probably one thing Iverson will never be remembered as: a Memphis Grizzlies player.
But facts are facts, and the fact is Iverson did play for the Grizzlies -- and those three games after signing as a free agent for the 2009-10 season make Iverson the holder of a rare bit of history. He will become the only Grizzlies player, whether Memphis or Vancouver, to be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Iverson's Grizzlies career was so short that we can look back on it game-by-game.
Nov. 2, 2009 - Grizzlies at Kings
Iverson came off the bench (for just the 10th time in his career) and scored 11 points in 18 minutes of action, but the Grizzlies fell to the Sacramento Kings 127-116 in overtime.
Nov. 4, 2009 - Grizzlies at Warriors
Iverson scored 18 points, the most in his Grizzlies career, and dished out a team-high seven assists. Despite the solid effort, the Grizzlies lost to the Golden State Warriors 113-105, giving a young Stephen Curry the first win of his career (the then-rookie scored seven points for Golden State that night).
Nov. 6, 2009 - Grizzlies at Lakers
Iverson's final game with the Grizzlies came against the team that had beaten him in the 2001 NBA Finals, and they handed him another loss on this night. Iverson scored eight points, while on the other side of the court, Kobe Bryant scored 41 for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Two days after the loss to the Lakers, Iverson took an indefinite leave of absence from the Grizzlies. He was waived a week later, temporarily retired in late November, then quickly unretired to re-sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played the final 25 games of his career. Iverson's short stint with the Grizzlies is a forgettable blip in a remarkable career, and perhaps even more forgettable for Memphis fans, who never even got to see Iverson play a home game.
But Iverson's election to the Hall of Fame means the Grizzlies officially have a Hall of Famer. That leaves only two current NBA franchises who have never had a Hall of Famer play for them: the Minnesota Timberwolves (who'll get off this list a few years after Kevin Garnett finally retires) and the New Orleans Pelicans, who gave the Charlotte part of their history (and thus Hall of Famers Alonzo Mourning and Robert Parish) back to the Hornets two years ago.

As expected, when the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the finalists for enshrinement in the Hall's Class of 2016 during media day at All-Star Weekend in Toronto, Shaquille O'Neal and Allen Iverson headlined the list of luminaries
They were joined at the announcement by Yao Ming, who was not officially anounced as a finalist on Friday, but who had previously been nominated for enshrinement through the Hall's International Committtee, and will join them in consideration for a spot in this summer's class.
The three stars became eligible for induction this season thanks to a pair of calls made last year by the Hall's decision-makers. First, they determined that Iverson's 10-game post-NBA stint playing in Turkey didn't count as a full season of professional play, meaning that A.I. — who didn't officially announce his retirement until October 2013, but who played his final NBA game in February 2010 — met the criteria of being "fully retired for five years before being eligible for Enshrinement." Then, they changed that guideline altogether, reducing the waiting period from five years to four years and opening the door to nomination for O'Neal and Yao, both of whom played their last NBA game during the 2010-11 season.
Some have charged that the Hall made those decisions in order to avoid fielding a 2016 class lacking in star power, especially coming on the heels of a 2015 ceremony that saw many worthy Hall of Famers enshrined — Dikembe Mutombo, Spencer Haywood, Jo Jo White, John Calipari, Lisa Leslie, Tommy Heinsohn and Louie Dampier, among others — but that didn't generate widespread crossover interest ... or, at least, not quite the level of interest that stars like Shaq, A.I. and Yao would generate. Hall of Fame President John Doleva, however, has said the decisions weren't driven by marketing.
Whatever the motivation, we're here now, which means we're all but assured a Shaq speech at the Hall this summer ... and, judging by the way he held court on Friday, that figures to be quite an event:
Iverson made seven All-NBA teams and 11 All-Star teams, won four scoring titles and one MVP award, ranks in the top 25 in NBA history in per-game scoring and total points, and made an indelible mark on the culture of the game, but as SB Nation's Tom Ziller noted in September, the "secretive voting body in charge of the Hall" might not be so thrilled about ushering A.I. into Springfield.
That's "Springfield," Allen.
