Many people usually don't understand the pain of the "ankylosing spondylitis." As a third stage patient( total is four stages), this disease is a genetic lesion caused by a problem with the immune system. When it attacks, multiple eroded joints in my body feel pain, even my jaw joint feel the pain, too. If I don't take medicine, I will feel the pain like I am being stabbed into the pelvis when I am walking. I could only rely on medication and stretching to reduce the pain and slow down the condition aggravated. Recently, medical development has found a way to control the disease better and might find a solution. Hope the new drug could come out soon!
This illustration is a symbolic way to explain my feelings when I am sick. If you have the same disease as me, you might be able to feel this artwork.

I often receive questions like “What was the hardest thing to overcome on this fitness journey?” or “Did you face any challenges throughout?”
So I’m going to share with you -
The Top 5 Problems I Faced During My Fitness Journey.
1. Abundance of Loose Skin:
This was the most traumatic for me. I lost weight very quickly through daily cardio and fat burning exercises. The weight loss would have been a good thing; except that the more fat that I lost, the more loose skin I gained! My previously stretched skin did not shrink at the same pace leaving me with excess skin around my upper body, glutes and stomach. I could almost flip the loose skin on my stomach up and down… that’s how much excess skin I had.
2. Wardrobe Crisis:
This was really bad as I couldn’t fit into my clothes throughout multiple occasions over the course of 2 years. My size fluctuated from XXL to S within the first few months. When I started weight training, my bulk grew and my size increased from S to L. Fortunately as my training progressed, I was able to maintain a steady M.
3. Smoking Cravings:
When I quit smoking overnight, it was torturous. I admit that there were times when I was tempted to take up the habit again; especially when people around me were puffing away. Whenever the cravings hit, I had to really, really focus to channel all my energy and concentration into training.
4. Extremely Odd Hours:
There were times when I had to resort to working out late at night or early in the morning due to heavy workload. When things got too busy, I would try to fit in at least 1 hour a day for training at the gym, at home or outdoors. I lost count of the many instances when I didn’t have time, but sometimes… you just have to make time.
5. Miserable Body Condition:
Low energy levels, low metabolism and low stamina. I faced it all. Coupled with my age and my size, I felt like crap after each workout. My physical condition was really weak and I would experience shortness of breath, muscle aches and joint pain which lasted days. My body had to gradually adapt to my new fitness routine as I slowly gained more strength and mobility.
It was not an easy journey, I admit. I am glad though, that I persevered and pushed through. At times when I felt like giving up, I would tell myself that I just need to do better than I did yesterday. Even if it’s just a little bit more, that BIT is today’s achievement.
