RAPE JOKES - NOT FUNNY NOW, NOT FUNNY EVER
1. Sexual harassment has been taking place in the schools for years, but only recently has it begun to get the attention it deserves. Some have called such attention as an overreaction to normal teenager behaviour who is going through puberty, but sexual harassment can inflict deep psychological damage on young people. Two recent incidents have made it clear to me that we must put our foot down and do something to stop it.
2. Sexual harassment is not an easy topic of discussion, let alone a joke. Derogatory sexual comments and rape jokes are very dangerous. When one person makes a comment that uses derogatory sexual language, others can use that comment and later repeat it to their friends. These friends will then absorb the comment and circulate the derogatory sexual language in their social circles, thinking that “it is okay” to laugh about it thus perpetuating a cycle that is difficult to break.
3. We are aware that the role of a teacher is to inspire, motivate, encourage and educate learners/students. A recent Malaysian student's tweet about her teacher who had joked and underplayed rape has gone viral. It was said that the teacher also made another sickening comment that “if boys get raped it doesn’t get reported because apparently boys would feel ‘good’ about it”. What’s more shocking is the fact that when the student lodged a report to her counselling teacher in school only to be told that it is “normal” for jokes like this to be made as boys feel alright and girls are often too sensitive and emotional. Instead of getting the justice she deserve, she was sent to the same counselling teacher for a “therapy” session.
4. We must put to an end of labelling rape jokes as “part of our culture.” Rape joke was never part of Malaysia’s culture and will never be. The modern society has belittled the voices of survivors, making conventional discussion very one-sided towards the perpetrators. Schools must take the responsibility for preserving an appropriate learning environment that rest primarily with school administrators. Listen to students when they speak up on any form of sexual harassment or approaches made by their teachers, peers, school personnel or any other members in the school. School staffs must never turn a deaf ear to students’ cries for help.
5. Thank you to the student who gathered every ounce of courage that is in her in making a very daring and bold decision of stepping out and speaking the truth whilst still handling her trauma/shock. Sexual harassment is not something young people need to learn to tolerate. Rather, it must be confronted and stopped so that schools can be a safe and positive space for children to learn. Ignoring the situation can often lead to a cycle of ongoing harassment and victimisation. Calling out on people who commit the “humour” of making a joke out of rape or any kind of violence need more efforts. Stern action must be taken to safeguard the safety of our students in school so that in future, actions like these will not be tolerated and it will be put to an end. We should make the elimination of sexual harassment or derogatory actions our top priority. I hope that the Ministry of Education will take action in engaging relevant authorities to make sure this horrendous practice ends.

MEDIA STATEMENT: ACT AGAINST "PERIOD SPOT CHECKS" IN SCHOOLS
1. The current trending issue that has been going around on Malaysian students (former and present) are sharing disturbing stories of period spot checks and sexual harassment in school during the month of Ramadhan. Having to prove to their teachers and higher ups that they were on their period also means having their private parts touched without consent (on the context of teacher and student relationship) as well as having their panties removed to show their menstrual pads. These form of intrusion and violation of inappropriate touching, personal autonomy and body shaming through the excuse of ‘disciplinary punishment’ but in reality, it was entirely sexual harassment and abuse of power. A school or educational institutions should create an environment where students can be at peace of mind and feel safe from the secular world outside.
2. The fact that this mortifying misconduct is still happening to our students now without any measures being taken against the perpetrators is disgusting! We must stand together and put to an end of what seems so shockingly common in our society. The trauma and mental stress of being groped and touched without consent can be shattering, leaving the victim feeling traumatized, depressed and ashamed. Trauma has lasting effects.
3. Making the decision to report misconduct like such or sexual harassment takes a great deal of courage. I applaud those who gather every ounce of their courage in speaking up. Your voice is needed for the safety of other students in school and future generations to come.
4. I call upon the Ministry of Education to take prompt action and investigations by relevant authorities in ensuring that the safety of our school students will be the top priority. As schools are supposed to be conducive sanctuaries where students can feel safe and confident, let us not shatter that part of trust from our girls.
5. Sexual harassment has no place in a school. If this persist on, it defeats the purpose of an educational institution entirely.

I’ve been receiving many DMs regarding SPM from my dear brothers and sisters from Malaysia. Many are panicking, worried, under lots of stress, and some of them are even facing anxiety attacks. Honestly, I wish I had the power to help each and every one of you. Unfortunately, I can’t. In fact, it would be highly unfair for me to criticise the decision made by the Malaysian Ministry of Education and start comparing SPM and UK GCSEs. So instead, I would like to reach out to each and every one of my dear brothers and sisters in Malaysia. Some of you have sat the trial. Some of you will be sitting the trial this week. And most of you think that you are still not ready for the real SPM which will be held soon.
The first step is to stop complaining. Secondly, you need to embrace the challenge and start believing in yourself. Trust me, time is too precious to waste by panicking and worrying unnecessarily. Use all the time you have left wisely by putting in 100% towards your studies. And above all, don’t forget to pray to The Almighty. If you have truly tried your best, have faith in God that He will give you the best in return!
You might say that it’s easier for me to preach since I’m not the one who’ll be sitting this exam. But trust me, even though I am younger than you, I’ve been through my fair share of challenges. My life has been a rollercoaster ride since my mother has been ill for many years. I am the eldest in the family, and my brother and sister are only 7 and 5 years old. My father had to juggle between home and work constantly. As the eldest, I had a big responsibility on my shoulders. Whenever my mother is gravely ill, I had to help take care of my little brother and sister as well as help to care for my mother too. And this has been the case for many years - not just this year or 2020, when the coronavirus hit us and the new norms started. This has been the norm for me and my family since forever.
And one of the biggest challenges I faced was when I had less than a month to study for the entrance exam to King Edward’s School, while other people had been preparing for at least two or three years in advance. I can still remember that all I did in that month or so was study and pray - and nothing else! But Alhamdulillah, with the blessings of Allah plus my hard work to achieve my goal, I didn’t just pass the exam…I was among the highest scorers! It was indeed a miracle, but also proof of just what hard work can do.
So if you are struggling and you think that your life is hard, stop and look around you. Each one of us has our own story and is struggling in our own way. But the secret is to never give up. You still have time, even though it may not be much, but you still have the chance to use your time wisely. I pray that The Almighty will make it easy for you in your studies and reward you for the work you put in. And don’t forget to thank your parents and your teachers and seek their blessings in these last moments before the exams. May The Almighty keep us all under His guidance…
Thoughts and prayers,
O. Mukhtar O. Mukhlis
