1. According to @StandNewsHK, two #Chinese scholars (at least of them is #CCP member) are nominated as the vice presidents of #HKU, months after the university sacked the co-founder of #UmbrellaMovement #BennyTai.

2. As described on #Tsinghua’s university website, one of the nominees, #ShenZuojun, was the “member of the Party committee of the faculty”. While Shen has reportedly taken part in #China’s Thousand Talents Plan, he will take charge of #HKU’s research affairs.

3. It casts more concerns on the city’s academic freedoms and #freespeech when #CCP members are now nominated to head #Hongkong’s university directly, let alone the chilling effects of the sweeping #NationalSecurityLaw.

4. The nomination also sends a worrying sign as #HK scholars and students will gradually face more political pressure when studying and researching in #Hongkong, especially for studies that are regarded as sensitive or too critical on the situation in #Hongkong and #China.

Formosa Trail 2020 last change to register
FT2020 coming in two months, we already order T-shirts, socks, bags, buff, etc with several extra. Due Covid situation we will keep numbers under 1000 people, unfortunately Japanese and HK friends cannot come this year. Right now only ~50 spots left, grab it today.

Two weeks ago, 12 Hong Kongers, all involved in the movement last year, were seized by China’s coast guard when fleeing to Taiwan for political refuge.

All of them are now detained in China. Chinese authorities have barred lawyers from access to detainees and even told them that they may face graver offenses under China’s laws.

With China’s draconian legal system, secret trials and the widespread practice of forced confession, their situation is extremely alarming.

I have imagined what would happen if I were detained and sent to China. The physical mistreatment and deprivation of liberty and human dignity seem inevitable.

Being separated from my beloved family and friends would also be heartbreaking. But if I suffered this misfortune, I hope the international community would continue standing with the Hong Kong people.

The most unbearable ordeal for a political prisoner is watching one’s home fall into authoritarian grip while others continue to harvest economic and other gains from the financial hub as though nothing happened.
