I enjoyed chatting candidly with Ming Pao — on culture, heritage, and breaking stereotypes.
I appreciate how they were able to capture the cultural nuances that are part of my identity, while also pushing forward the reality that in many ways, the cultural divide between the Philippines and Hong Kong is not so far apart as one may think.
“Filipinos seem to be both near and far to us... But Crisel Consunji, a Filipino who has lived in Hong Kong for 13 years and is a performer and educator, tells us that Filipinos are far more than these vague impressions of ‘others.’ From their interesting daily life culture, we may be able to find some traces of our own culture.” (As translated online)
Thank you for sharing a lot of the things I’m passionate about, and for letting me talk about the culture and heritage I come from ❤️

#Opinion by Benny Tai Yiu-Ting 戴耀廷|"Yet in doing so, they have actually strengthened Hongkongers’ cultural identity and shared values, thus toughening people’s resistance. This is something the CCP and the Hong Kong government failed to anticipate. The more unreasonable the suppression is and the more ridiculous the reasons cited by the authorities, the stronger people’s urge to resist. Everyone is just waiting for the next outbreak of resistance."

"Diocesan: An Art Legacy" is composed of the "Diocesan Artists" of Diocesan Boys’ School (DBS), including the former head of the Art Department of DBS, Hong Kong's leading artist Kwong Yeu-ting, who is well- known in local and overseas art circles; Dr. Daniel Blyth, who graduated in the 1960s and is still teaching at the DBS; Tugo Cheng, an architect and photographer who graduated at the turn of the millennium; Chan Kwan Lok, a Chinese Ink painter born in the 90s and Tang Chi Wong who used to be a pottery tutor at the school.
The exhibits include painting, photography, and ceramics. Among them, Kwong Yeu-ting’s prints open up a new horizon that combines Chinese art tradition and modern art. They contain unique visual elements and have a great influence on the development of Hong Kong’s local art. After the 1980s, Kwong has not held many exhibitions in Hong Kong which makes this exhibition a not-to-miss opportunity to see his work.
Besides, this exhibition also explores how Chinese aesthetics permeate visual art forms that are created in different ages and in varied cultural backgrounds. All grew up in a different period during the colonial era of Hong Kong, these five artists make use of different media to explore their identity in this city where the East meets the West.
