今回は、航空会社が多忙期になるとチケットの価格を大幅に引き上げたり、飲食店が材料費の高騰に伴いメニューの料金を値上げするなど、本来の価格から料金を吊り上げることを表す際によく使われる英表現をご紹介いたします。

Jack up
→「値上げする / 料金を引き上げる」

「Jack up」は状況によって様々な意味を成すフレーズですが、「Jack up the price(値段をつり上げる)」や「Jack up the interest rate(利子をつり上げる)」のように、サービスや商品の料金が値上げされたり、ローンの利子が引き上げられることを表す場合に日常会話ではよく使われています。ポイントは“急激”に値上げすることです。また、急激な値上げに対して不満を抱いていることを示す意味合いもあります。
✔「Hike」も同じ意味ですが、「Jack up」の方がより口語的かつ不満の気持ちが強い響きがある。
<例文>
That restaurant jacked up the prices.
(あのレストランは値上げしました。)
My credit card company jacked up the interest rates.
(私が使っているクレジット会社が利子を急激に引き上げました。)
They jacked up the gasoline prices again.
(ガソリンの価格がまた急激に高騰しました。)
The consumption tax hiked to 8%.
(消費税が8%に引き上げられました。)
