One of my favourite payment method is #paywithdebit , because It’s Quick.Secure.Convenient ! All it takes is one tap and the transaction is done! Its secure so I don't have to worry especially for online purchases but my favourite part is because its contactless which means I totally don't have to carry cash & honestly, I haven't really touched cash is a very long time. All I bring around is my debit card and my mobile phone 🤭 its easy to track monthly expenses too, instead of keeping tons of receipts which some fades off in due time. Next time you need to pay for something, try it!

วันนี้เราลองมาดูห้างหนึ่ง
ที่เป็นยักษ์ใหญ่ในธุรกิจค้าส่งระดับโลก
ซึ่งความน่าสนใจของบริษัทนี้ก็คือ
พวกเขามีลูกค้าที่ยอมจ่ายค่าสมาชิกรายปี มากกว่า 100 ล้านคน

Costco Wholesale Corporation เป็นบริษัทสัญชาติอเมริกัน
ที่ทำธุรกิจห้างค้าส่งในรูปแบบโกดัง (Warehouse Store) ที่มีชื่อว่า “Costco”

โดยห้าง Costco ใช้ระบบที่เรียกว่า “Cash and Carry” คือคนที่เข้าไปใช้บริการจะต้องบริการตัวเองและชำระค่าสินค้าเหล่านั้นเป็นเงินสด และทางห้างจะเน้นขายสินค้าครั้งละมาก ๆ หรือเป็นล็อตใหญ่ ๆ

ซึ่งถ้ายังนึกไม่ออกว่าธุรกิจแบบนี้เป็นอย่างไร พูดให้เห็นภาพง่าย ๆ ก็คล้ายกับธุรกิจของห้าง Makro ซึ่งเป็นศูนย์จำหน่ายสินค้าแบบค้าส่งรายใหญ่ในประเทศไทย

จุดเริ่มต้นของเรื่องนี้ เกิดจากคุณ Sol Price ที่ได้บุกเบิกธุรกิจค้าปลีกที่มีลักษณะเหมือนคลังสินค้าขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นในสหรัฐอเมริกา

โดยคุณ Sol Price นั้นเป็นผู้ก่อตั้งร้านค้าปลีกแบบดิสเคานต์สโตร์ ที่ชื่อว่า FedMart ขึ้นมาในปี 1954 ที่เมืองซานดิเอโก สหรัฐอเมริกา

และจุดสำคัญของเรื่องนี้ก็คือ หนึ่งในพนักงานของเขาที่ชื่อว่า “James Sinegal” ซึ่งต่อมาได้กลายเป็นผู้ร่วมก่อตั้งห้าง Costco

คุณ James Sinegal คนนี้เริ่มต้นทำงานที่ FedMart หนึ่งปีหลังจากที่ร้านก่อตั้งขึ้นมา โดยเริ่มจากการเป็นเด็กแพ็กของ และค่อย ๆ ไต่เต้า จนก้าวมาเป็นผู้จัดการ และเริ่มมีฐานะขึ้นในเวลาต่อมา

ต่อมาคุณ James ได้พบกับคุณ Jeffrey Brotman นักธุรกิจอดีตอัยการชาวอเมริกัน ผู้ที่หลงใหลและเคยมีประสบการณ์ทำธุรกิจค้าปลีกของครอบครัวมาก่อน

เมื่อทั้งสองคนที่มีความหลงใหลในธุรกิจค้าปลีกและค้าส่งมาเจอกัน
คุณ James Sinegal ก็ตัดสินใจลาออกจาก FedMart
เพื่อมาร่วมก่อตั้ง Costco กับคุณ Jeffrey Brotman ในปี 1983 โดยตั้งสาขาแรกในเมืองซีแอตเทิล รัฐวอชิงตัน สหรัฐอเมริกา

Costco นำรูปแบบของห้างขายสินค้าแบบโกดังขนาดใหญ่ และระบบสมาชิกในแบบที่ FedMart ใช้ มาเป็นรูปแบบการให้บริการ

และด้วยทั้งสองคนมีประสบการณ์และความเข้าใจในการทำธุรกิจค้าปลีกและค้าส่งเป็นอย่างดี ทำให้ Costco เป็นที่รู้จักในสหรัฐอเมริกา และขยายสาขาได้อย่างรวดเร็ว

ความน่าสนใจของเรื่องนี้อยู่ตรงที่ว่า
ในปี 1993 หรือ 10 ปี หลังจากที่ Costco ถูกก่อตั้งขึ้นมา
Costco ก็ได้ไปควบรวมกับคู่แข่งรายสำคัญในขณะนั้น ที่ชื่อว่า Price Club

ซึ่ง Price Club คือห้างค้าส่งที่แยกตัวออกมาจาก FedMart
ที่ทำงานเก่าของคุณ James Sinegal ผู้ร่วมก่อตั้ง Costco นั่นเอง..

Costco ขยายสาขาไปจนทั่วสหรัฐอเมริกา
เริ่มขยายไปยังเม็กซิโก และขยายไปในอีกหลายประเทศมากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ
จนปัจจุบัน Costco มีสาขาทั้งหมด 804 สาขา โดย 69% เป็นสาขาที่อยู่ในสหรัฐอเมริกา และอีก 31% เป็นสาขาที่อยู่นอกสหรัฐอเมริกา

โดยขนาดของศูนย์จำหน่ายสินค้าของ Costco นั้นมีขนาดพื้นที่เฉลี่ยต่อร้านอยู่ที่ประมาณ 13,500 ตารางเมตร เมื่อลองนำมาเทียบกับ ศูนย์จำหน่ายสินค้าของ Makro (แบบดั้งเดิม) ที่อยู่ในประเทศไทย นั้นมีขนาดพื้นที่ต่อร้านอยู่ที่ประมาณ 5,000-12,000 ตารางเมตร

ซึ่งสินค้าที่ Costco ขายนั้นมีหลากหลายตั้งแต่อาหารแห้ง อาหารสด ของใช้จิปาถะ อุปกรณ์ตกแต่งบ้าน รวมไปถึงการทำธุรกิจสถานีบริการน้ำมันเพิ่มขึ้นมาด้วย

ที่สำคัญคือ ลูกค้าที่จะซื้อของจากห้าง Costco ได้นั้น
ต้องเป็นคนที่มีบัตรสมาชิก ซึ่งกรณีนี้ คล้าย ๆ กับการซื้อของในห้าง Makro สมัยก่อน ที่ต้องเป็นสมาชิกก่อนเท่านั้นถึงจะซื้อของได้

โดยผู้ถือบัตรสมาชิกของ Costco ก็จะได้สิทธิพิเศษหลายอย่าง
เช่น สามารถซื้อสินค้าในราคาส่วนลดจากราคาทั่วไป, ได้รับเครดิตเงินคืน (reward) ซึ่งบางกรณีเครดิตเงินคืนที่ได้รับนั้น อาจมีมูลค่าสูงมากกว่าค่าสมาชิกด้วยซ้ำ

และที่ผ่านมา จำนวนสมาชิกของ Costco ก็เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง

ปี 2018 จำนวนลูกค้าที่เป็นสมาชิก 94.3 ล้านคน รายได้ค่าสมาชิก 94,200 ล้านบาท
ปี 2019 จำนวนลูกค้าที่เป็นสมาชิก 98.5 ล้านคน รายได้ค่าสมาชิก 100,500 ล้านบาท
ปี 2020 จำนวนลูกค้าที่เป็นสมาชิก 105.5 ล้านคน รายได้ค่าสมาชิก 106,200 ล้านบาท

ซึ่งเมื่อเราเอารายได้จากค่าสมาชิกทั้งหมดหารด้วยจำนวนลูกค้าที่เป็นสมาชิกแล้ว
ค่าสมาชิกรายปีที่ลูกค้าแต่ละคนต้องจ่ายนั้นอยู่ที่ประมาณ 1,000 กว่าบาท
โดยในปี 2020 ที่ผ่านมา จำนวนสมาชิกของ Costco ก็ทะลุ 100 ล้านคน เป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้ว

ทีนี้ลองมาดูผลประกอบการของ Costco

รายได้และกำไรของ Costco Wholesale Corporation
ปี 2018 รายได้ 4.3 ล้านล้านบาท กำไร 94,000 ล้านบาท
ปี 2019 รายได้ 4.6 ล้านล้านบาท กำไร 101,000 ล้านบาท
ปี 2020 รายได้ 5.0 ล้านล้านบาท กำไร 120,000 ล้านบาท
รายได้เติบโต 16% ขณะที่กำไรเติบโต 28%

จะเห็นว่า ธุรกิจของ Costco มีอัตรากำไรสุทธิแค่ 2.4%
แต่ก็เป็นธรรมชาติของธุรกิจ ที่เน้นการขายครั้งละมาก ๆ หรือขายเป็นล็อตใหญ่ในราคาถูก
ซึ่งเราจะเห็นว่า แม้อัตรากำไรสุทธิมีเพียงแค่ 2.4% แต่ก็เป็นมูลค่าถึงหลักแสนล้านบาท

และด้วยการเติบโตอย่างแข็งแกร่ง จึงทำให้ในระยะเวลา 10 ปีที่ผ่านมา
มูลค่าบริษัทของ Costco นั้นเพิ่มขึ้นจาก 945,000 ล้านบาท มาอยู่ที่ 4.5 ล้านล้านบาท
หรือเพิ่มขึ้นมาประมาณ 376% เลยทีเดียว..

In JAPAN, most of the small Ramen shop and local restaurant do not have a credit card payment system. Thus, you must have at least 10,000 Japanese yen (90USD) per day. Also, Japanese taxi driver told me that they prefer customers to pay by cash. Even though, they take credit card but it will take more than 2 min to finish the transaction. I know it it not very convenient that you should carry a lot of cash in today's society, especially Chinese and US citizen may feel very surprised about this situation... BUT this is JAPANESE REALITY, even though we have advanced technology, our credit card payment system, QR code payment system, APPLE PAY, are not that common in a Japanese daily life. But you can use your credit card at 711, family mart, Lawson. So, just ask them before you buy products. *Credit Card Tsukae Masuka? *Can I use credit card?
