When nursing homes began barring visitors to keep the coronavirus out, Jack Eccles decided to move in. Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham, N.C., had turned him away on March 12 when he arrived as usual to spend much of the day with his wife, Gerry, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

So he returned the next day with a suitcase of clothes, books, medications and his computer. Hillcrest had agreed to rent him a single room in its assisted-living area so that he could care for Gerry, who is 91.

Dr. Eccles, who is 93 and a longtime Baptist pastor, remains under lockdown at Hillcrest. For five months, he hasn’t left and has rarely seen the sun - the window in his room faces a brick wall.

He isn’t allowed to walk around the 154-bed facility, except to Gerry’s room, where he feeds her, and sometimes to the lobby, where he can see family members through the windows. Meals in the facility’s spacious dining room and its festive monthly parties remain paused.

Hillcrest sometimes feels like a prison, he says, but he won’t move out and leave Gerry until it reopens to visitors. “We’re married. I want to be with her. She took care of me for 70 years, and now it’s my turn,” he says.

The coronavirus cut a deadly swath through senior-care facilities, with more than 70,000 deaths so far, according to a Wall Street Journal tally of state and federal data. Hillcrest has seen two cases of Covid-19, both in patients who came from a hospital in late April. One died.

2019 has been a pivotal year for me although had I not stopped to reflect, I wouldn’t have felt so and just let time slip through my fingertips.

With so much that has gone on, as much as I hate to admit it, I‘d have to thank social media for allowing me to recall my highlights of the year. I truly do believe reflecting is a vital process in learning, growing, and becoming a better me.

I’m glad my dad made it onto my #2019bestnine... this year hasn’t been a good one for his health what with 6 hospitalizations that got us extremely concerned. But it lets us remember to not waste time on trivial matters and just appreciate every single moment with our loved ones as we will never know if it’ll be the last. Beyond grateful that he’s back on his feet because I don’t want to ever get use to my warrior dad being confined to a hospital bed 😔

Other pivotal moments in 2019 included the launch of my EP album (like finally, haha, took 3 years!!), attending my first Malaysian film festival, being awarded @nuyoumalaysia’s top 25 trendsetter and later @harpersbazaarmy’s top 10 most stylish women, met my childhood HK mega superstar crush (@kootinlok_louis), meeting @henrygolding TWICE, expanding my international networks in film/TV to hopefully one day produce my own work, learning and appreciating more of my local film/TV industry, producing super fun covers, and endorsing and collaborating with multiple amazing brands that have been such a joy to work with. And on top of all the work I was doing, I was still blessed with the opportunity and time to travel and see, feel, experience so much of what the world has to offer!

Thankful for it all ❤️ and thankful for all of you who have stuck through it with me on my colorful journey and added more colour to it!

First time travelling via Mega Bus Gold on what I thought was going to be a luxury sleeper bus experience felled way below our expectations🚌 For a regular bus costing only £4.50 from Edinburgh to London one way, we paid £35 extra per person hoping to get a good night's sleep. To our surprise the double decker bus was further divided into upper and lower bunk with "double bed" in the lower bunk😠 Which means once you get onto the bus, you have to lie flat in a submarine or capsule hostel confined space not even able to sit up.

If the person above is heavy then you barely get any space! Further more the walkway was so narrow only one person can pass through and you have to put your hand luggages all on your bed💼 We have sat through 9 hours of uncomfortable night bus in Eastern Europe before, paying this much for an experience like this was just not worth it😠 #websitelookedtoogood

第一次搭乘英國的 Mega Bus Gold 豪華雙層臥鋪公車🚌 從 Edinburgh 到倫敦感覺真的不值得那個票價啊！當時提早訂好像比普通的公車每人貴了 £35，由於官網上看起來好像真的不錯於是 York 這位公子說想要體驗看看😒

沒有想到雙層巴士臥鋪居然還分上下層！代表我們睡在像是潛水艇或是膠囊酒店還小的空間！由於 “雙人” 臥鋪是下層並排，床底是硬的板子，睡起來對背來說可能比較好。上面的 “單人” 臥鋪有點像是網子，所以是凹下去的… 只不過上面的人越重，下面的人臉上空間越小… （可仔細看我們照片…）

而且一進車只能爬進你的空間，連坐起來都不能起來😒 睡在裡面的 York 半夜上廁所更是慘，還需要爬過我才能出去。走道也只夠一個人站，也不准放東西。所以隨身包包都要堆在自己的床上… 總而言之跟我們想像的落差很大！提早訂的普通公車，類似時間點也才 £4.50。我們之前也在東歐搭過整晚九小時的超級不舒服夜車，所以兩人多付這麼多錢真的是覺得很不值得😠 #被漂亮官網給騙了
